Question about post-2021 motor tax rates

    Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered before and I missed it.

According to revenue the new motor tax rates apply to “NEW PRIVATE CARS registered on or after 1 January 2021”.

Does this include pre-January 2021 cars imported from say the UK, if they are only registered in Ireland (VRT paid and put on Irish plates) post-January 2021? A dealer mentioned to me that this was the case and I was a bit surprised by it, so would be good to know if anyone had any insight?

Yes I think all imported cars except pre 2008 will fall into the new wltp tax rates if imported after Jan 2021.

Revenue will use the formula to calculate any nedc stuff to wltp. So there will be an increase over the equivalent car that was registered here before Jan 2021.

I only had a quick look at some cars and the jump wasn't huge. But the higher Co2 cars will probably top out at the highest rates.

Edit. Just had a look at how it would effect a F80 M3, the Co2 rate pre 2021 was 194 and €1200 for the year. Using the revenue formula to bring it in line with the WLTP Co2 it brings it up to 213 so it falls into the €1250. So only €50 extra which isnt bad.

More importantly, what car is it?

Interesting, thanks. The dealer I was talking to told me that an F80/F82 registered post-2021 would jump up to the €2,400 band. But actually looking at the bands I’m not sure that’s right. In fact might it even drop into the lower €790 band if the emissions are between 191 and 200, rather than falling into the old €1,200 band for 191-225?

EDIT: I posted this reply before I read your edit above! My suggestion above is obviously wrong because I was still using the old co2 rates, but at least if it’s still staying in the second highest band then that’s not bad at all. How did you find the WLTP co2 levels for this car by the way?

If you put it into the vrt calculator it will give you the calculated wltp rate.

It works out at 213 so it falls into the €1250 bracket of the new rates

If a car is not on the vrt calculator you can just use the formula below to work out what the wltp emissions will be.
