E39 525i Starting Problem
Alright lads, the car is in for bodywork at the moment but they've come across a problem, she won't start. Everything else is getting power, all the dash lights up, radio works, lights etc but an auto electrician said that there's no power even getting to the starter.
This happened once the day after I bought it but started perfect the next day and never gave any bother until yesterday is the shop, I thought it was the battery but now I'm stuck.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd like the be out of this Yaris ASAP :tounge:

E39 525i Starting Problem
Try the spare key first but after that it could be an EWS fault esp if the starter is not getting a 12v signal

Tried the spare, no luck. It's not even clicking over, I take it something like this would store a fault?

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
Whats the voltage on the battery

Hopefully so, various things give trouble in relation to non starts but if the starter isn't getting 12v then I'd say it's either fuse blown, ignition barrel, key (tried that) or faulty ews. Next up after checking fuses id try crossing the starter motor but should only do this if your confident in what your doing. If it starts then you know the immobiliser is ok and it's a 12v supply issue, usually the ignition barrel.

Re: E39 525i Starting Problem
Ah ok sorry missed that , but im sure your well aware the e39's behave really odd when the batterys low different to other cars but id "hope" an auto electrician would check that first [emoji1]

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
There was no mention of the battery but I'll say it to them on Monday to give it a check. Fecking stuck in the Yaris another bit

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
Many thanks to Mark for coming out and diagnosing the car, getting an ECU Rejected fault relating to the EWS. The weird thing is that we can talk to the ECU and EWS so we're hoping it's still some loose cabling or faulty fuse, going to be a while checking I think.
We also ruled out the Autobox's lock so it's not the switch in that.
Battery was down to around 5.8V when it should be at 12.7/8V for starting.......

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
The EWS and DME have gone out of sync, when you go to read the ISN from the EWS it says "ERROR_ECU_REJECTED" for both ISN & Password.
Conflicting reports online stating what can be done about this. Some say just try re-align the EWS/DME, or try to write the ISN again. Other reports say that it needs some special software to reset the module.

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
How did you run the diagnostic with the battery so low ?
Did you try swapping a good battery in and trying again
Id say that battery will be dead now no point charging it

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
I bought a e39 couple of months back with same ecu rejected code.the lad had tried to start it for about a month and wouldn't go.it just stopped one day when he was going to work and the garage got ecu rejected on their machine.he brought it home and tried for weeks to sort it,changed all the fuses and checked the wires.he advertised it on adverts for 200 euro and I seen it and bought it.tried to start it at his house and wouldn't go.he had jump leads and no go,i put my e39 battery into it and started first turn...I was ging to use it for parts but its too good.point is it was the battery that was at fault.ive had it for 6 or 8 months and even started a thread on here about the fault..never fails to start and runs fine, done about 3000 miles in it since buying it.worth spending money on a new battery and not bothering with jump leads..sorry for long reply...

There was a booster pack connected up,after we spotted the low voltage. We were saying that it likely needed a new battery anyway based on how low the voltage went.
This should be first on the to do list I'd say.

Yeah the battery will be the first thing to do, what would people recommend to put into it?

Sound, looking at Yuasa on Halfords at €130, Bosch inside Otto for €135. Bosch be a better fit?
-
RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
Paid 80 for mine in the motor factors so might be worth checking with them yuasa and bosch would be similar in spec and quality imo

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem

Yeah will do. Man, if a battery sorted it like Satumashirt I would be sooooooooo happy.

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
So, dropped a new Yuasa battery into the 5, no luck :(
Mechanic next door to the body shop is going to take a look at the ECU today I think and see if there's anything blown or corroded.
Could be an expensive time ahead.

Yeah, just gave BavarianCare a PM on Driver after Mark recommended too, after that it's down to MMW I'd say.
-
RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
Tried a brand new key, no luck as I thought. There's an electronics specialist down in Passage so that's the next call before MMW.

RE: E39 525i Starting Problem
Ah FFS, sorry to hear about all your trouble Dave, was hoping to read that the new key sorted it out. Hopefully will be sorted soon without too many further expenses.

It is very annoying but come hell or high water I'll have this car back on the road, I love it too much
If it's not something simple I might just see about bypassing it for now.

The main reason I didn't check those fuses at the time was because I was told they were checked, showed the faulty fuse to the the guy who checked them and he still couldn't see the break :tounge:

Unfortunately I'm still in the Yaris until Tuesday evening I think, the body shop want to do some extra work free of charge as a favour for the mess up.
