Have a 97 523 for sale, on and off over the past few months for around the 1000 mark and have hardly a nibble. It had an NCT until this month and needs nothing. Are petrol E39 sales dead bar the odd M5 here or there ?

too many for sale for 3 or 4 hundred, bought for drifting etc. 1000 for a 97 probably struggle no matter how good it is unless someone from here wanted it.most who would pay 1000 would want msport kit etc.Quote:

It is a sport (suspension,steering,seats,shadowtrim)- but back in the day bmw didnt put sport bumpers on E39s, msport appeared in 99. Also has facelift lights . Still probably doesnt help.Quote:

Sounds like breaking it or keeping it as a project are the only options these days ?
6 cylinders :wink:Quote:

If I was in the market for a project e39, I would consider a good condition 523 se if it was cheap, and fit an M50 manifold, 528 exhaust (or with some work a 530 exhaust), M-sport it up and enjoy it :) I don't think the 520 M54B22 is easy to tune.
Having said that, if you weren't going to mod it, as Aivis said it wouldn't make sense to buy the 523 as it would be the same power out of the box althought the 520 would have a little less torque.
Dunno why I never hear of anybody fitting m50 / 528 exhaust on e39 523s though??? :/
Why not do that if you can get as much power or more out of the modified M52B25 as a standard M54B25 for less money? I think it's been said before though, most people who buy e39s don't fiddle with them as much as e36s, I suppose it's why it's hard to shift parts when people break e39s.
there is a huge amount of rubbish on the roads i see probably one maybe two at most really tidy e39's a week the rest do be hanging together people just wont put the cash into them , then theres the people that want them but cant justify paying 1200 euro tax on a 1000 euro carQuote:

That was kinda my plan M50 manifold +BBTB + 328/528 exhaust + MSport front and rear. Never got around to it and circumstances changed.Quote:

just had a look at your car all major common e39 issues addressed and looks well looked after nice interior and wheels theres not many 523's actually up for sale at the moment and the odd one at 500 looks like a henhouse
i see its at 1100 maybe drop to 900 as people probably limit there search to a 1000 euro when using the search options on donedeal
To give an idea, I sold a '03 520i SE with years test and 90k ish miles for under €1500.... And that took a while to shift!
thats cause the colour was rotten :tounge::DQuote:

Thanks Gar - was thinking that about the 1000 limit, the price is just really so I have some wiggle room. Its a pity because I spent my ownership fixing any issues and bringing the car back to a good level, with a view to performance mods after that and never got around to the performance mods.Quote:

Nobody wants E39s now except for a few lads on here and other sites. None of my mates would consider (the eeedjits!!) ;) an E39 as E60s are very affordable now.
Everybody wants an e39!,but with the high tax/petrol costs it puts people off buying them, id take one over a e60 any day of the week...Quote:

You have to remember, its 17 years old - how many other cars at that age are even still on the go :P
Kaveman's 1998 528i, for example wouldnt last long on the market, Id say...and then the likes of Gar's 525i would be snapped up pretty quick...Id even like to think my own would sell without issue, if I gave it a bit of a spit and polish :P
Could you keep it - have you classic insurance on it? The tax is the killer!
Have you storage space? Lock it away - take it out in 5 years time, when even less E39's are about...enjoy it then or even sell it then, as it'll probably be worth a few quid more.
My cars unsellable dave with 141k miles on it now
So the plan ? Drive it till the wheels fall off and when they do put a new set on and keep driving [emoji1]
Il continue like this until I can get an e39 M5/e46 M3 or 335i could be driving the e39 for quite a while
With regards nodding e39's anything tasty is usually super expensive even a front lip for it is the guts of a 1k then wheels very few suit it thankfully they look damn good when left stock with just a few tweeks ,the only decent performance mods for an m54 is a supercharger but there 5k alone
As echoed here, they are so hard to get now it's not even funny. We sold an original Irish 2002 530d low ish mileage sport last year for 2.5k.
Would love a nice 530i or d sport but even the game I'm in its hard to come across one.
Yeah its middle aged  ,but it probably in better shape than a lot of newer cars. Don't have classic insurance, does it not need to be 20 years old for that?Quote:

15 years with one of the Insurance Companies - the name has gone out of my head - someone else will fill you in!
How much do you want for it.....I'll put mine in storage for a bit, keep it at the 110k its at now and when yours hits 250k, Ill bring out the Black Beauty with the M-Pars from yours on it!! :P :DQuote:

It was for sale for a while and I learned a few lessons,
1:DON'T PUT IT ON ADVERTS.iE
2:GET A DIFFERENT SIM IF YOU DO!
3:DON'T EXPEC WHAT YOU WANT FOR IT.
4:DON'T EVEN TALK TO PEOPLE WHO E MAIL YOU AN OFFER(they won't even have it)
Your right though, only the sports are selling, and because mine was 2.0 tax was a big selling point,
Good luck to its new owner Paul, a genuine nice guy
IM BACK INTO E36s, the recession proof rockets!
:->...laters.

The e39 is getting old now in fairness. I still love mine and I have no plan to buy a e60 ever. F10 why not.
Many buyers go by the year of registration. Anything over 10 years old is a big nono. That is a social thing in my opinion. There is no difference between a e39 and e60 tax wise, unless you go post 2008, an e39 would be cheaper to maintain. People just want newer cars.
Aderts can be a pain, BUT I adertised both my E39 520i and my E46 320i on BMW sites/donedeal and adverts.Quote:

Cold facts are most people hate having a tax disc worth more than car. A number plate is what a lot of people gauge on how good a car is. Petrol isn't cheap. An old e39 ticks all those negatives. All this means for cars of this era are only good for 2 things. Welded diff drifters and enthusiasts looking for donors to keep their pride and joy on the road. My advise if you can, keep it, store it and in a few years take it back on the road. Sounds like its worth more to you than a thousand if that's true Youl not find another one like it again so keep it ..
Ps I am looking for a cheap facelift e39 to keep mine on the road.
@[Gar] will take a few hunderd for is high miler! :D :PQuote:

There is a 2002 530i M sport in purple with 30k miles for sale at 12.000 pounds.
Madness
If I came into a bit of money - I'd go on the look for a low miler E39, just to have it in hears to come - but 12k is VERY steep!
Screw that 12k buys a tidy M5 id pay a premium for a late 525/530i individual but nowhere near 12k [emoji1]
Nevermind 12k for a 530, there was a 2002 m5 for sale at 19.995 with 43k miles.
A lemans blue for sale at 16.000 pounds with 56k miles
All on Pistonheads
I've a 96, 523i with FBMWSH, and only 60K miles on it (actually only 30k on the block, as it was replaced for nikasil under bmw warranty in the uk), and loads of spec (xenons, shadowline, lowered, clears all around, 18" style 32's) but I'll be holding onto it considering the values here are so low. It can only go up from here.
It's a bit like when people say you can't buy a cheap e39 M5, as it will cost you either way. The same, in my opinion at least, rings true for any e39. I know a few guys who have bought them in the past for low prices, and then spent double or more in the first year sorting out issues.
The average e39 for sale here needs a shitload of work done, or will need it soon. Good ones will start becoming rare in the next few years.
So to the op, don't give it away, keep it.
That sounds lovely any pictures?Quote:

Sure, here's a mini album:

It could do with a good detailing, and a little paint to make it perfect, but mechanically I would challenge anyone to fault it in any way. I was never tempted to m-sport it, I like it as it is.
Thanks that looks fantastic. What colour is it? I had a '96 Montreal 523i years ago with grey leather. I really like it especially as it's untouched and you made the right choice. I have been looking for a decent E39 but can't find any.Quote:
