Garth Brooks in Croke Park
It seems there's lots of news at home today about the Garth Brooks concerts, ranging from hopes on the news at 7am that 5 nights might go ahead, but maybe on different nights with a break. Then later the Council said 3 nights are the max and almost at the same time a resident has filed a challenge to any concerts going ahead.
What are peoples views on this? Just thought I'd open it up to debate.

Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I suppose I should throw in my 2p first.
On balance I think all 5 nights should go ahead. It'd be great for the city & the country (even ifs a pain in the hole)
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Nightmare for the residents - I can totally see where they are coming from!
Cant remember the figure, but was it something like 250 million for the economy, all things considered, if it goes ahead? All 5 should go ahead!
He wouldnt be my cup of tea though and listening to that for 5 nights would be painful.....the residents should rent their houses out....weeks holiday in the sun and probably still have a few quid extra...probably be people be mad to be in ear shot of the stadium! :P
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I read somewhere the original agreement with residents made during redevelopment, Was 3 special events per year.
There was 3 I Direction Concerts, They want 5 Gareth Brooks and there having an American Football thing later in the year.
3 days to set it too apparently, So that's nearly a week of disruption.
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Defo should go ahead.
Buy a house beside a stadium and give out when somethings on??? Coooommmme oooooonnnn people!!!
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Their just looking for money
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
If you dont give out you get nothing for free! ;)
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I can totally see where the residents are coming from. I'm close enough to Kilmainham and the concerts there are annoying, I would hate to imagine what five nights of GB would be like!
Plus its not only the five nights, its the two weeks setting up and dismantling the stage with work going on throughout the night. I think what he is doing at the moment is out and out blackmail, the council should stick to their guns and tell him to f off.
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I'm hoping no concerts go ahead, mainly due to the fact that I loath Garth Brooks and this can only lead to more hatred for him.
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Working beside it I can see where they are coming from, 5 concerts is taking the pish alright. What people don't see is the complete lockdown on the area from lunchtime each day until well after midnight. It's a pain in the ass not just for the locals but for local business's too. We can argue that people bought beside the stadium knowing that this can happen but it's a GAA grounds, not a concert venue. Factor in the GAA matches in each weekend during the summer you'd soon get sick of it.
But yes it will bring a lot of dollars to the city but why not spread it around. Have some of the gigs down the country such as Cork etc.
Anyways, he's a has been and the gigs will be crap :D
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
If all the people that are going 3, 4 and 5 times; just went the once, there'd only be need for 2 gigs! :D
As with everything; there'll be winners and loosers.....if the 5 gigs go ahead, the biggest winner is Dublin, with an expected 1 in 5 people coming from abroad! If Dublin can put on a good show, the return could be 3 or 4 fold with folk returning for weekend breaks, or whatever!
It should never been allowed to go to 5 gigs unless everything had approval. Aiken are on the pigs back anyways, with all the money for 5 gigs, plus handling fees, sitting in a high interest account, and only having to return the price of the ticket to customers of the gigs that dont go ahead.....fair few quid in their arse pockets!
-
Garth Brooks in Croke Park
If you take this back to the root cause it's no place for an 80,000 seater stadium. I'm all for leaving Croke Park where it is for historical reasons etc etc but such a big stadium should have been build out near the m50 for example so it could be used to maximum value after all the all the taxpayer money that went into it.
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Bring back Bertie's Bowl! :D
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
How can some people say they don't want the concerts to go ahead because they don't like him? You can't have an opinion if they'd the case.
I find it gas how Sinn Fine put out a statement to get the concerts to go ahead. They are only saying that to get the goes in favour of them. IDIOTS!
The GAA and Dublin City Council fecked up big time by not issuing the licences for the two extra days. Although I think GB and Aiken got a bit greedy by adding two extra dates anyway.
At the end of the day....... Garth Brooks is still shiiiiiiite

Seems to work according to the polls :hehe!:
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
That's cos they say what the people wanna hear but don't actually follow up
The country would be completely fucked if they came into power but let's not get into that ;)

Haha Venom is dead right, they always go against the mainstream or just say no to get the populist vote, look at their record with europe and they say the are pro european, daft party, but in saying that no worse than the rest of the clowns there.

No, they are definitely worse than the current crowd. If they ever got into power (God forbid but it's looking more likely these days) they would need to overhaul their entire methodology..
anyway I digress..Here's hoping all 5 get cancelled :D

RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
What confuses me is that there were only initially 2 nights planned - which he was more than happy to come across to do. Opportunuty arose to sell more tickets and they grabbed it, but now its 5 nights or nothing.
I agree that certain residents should have expected slight disruption at times if they chose to live near Croker, but they're living beside a sports stadium, not a music venue.
They should cancel all the gigs in Croker and shift the whole lot to a different location.

I've heard Slane being thrown around. Good time of year etc could work.
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I'd imagine the owners of slane would only do a one night only thing and if they did I think capacity for all ticket holders might be a problem. 5 nights would be complete chaos with traffic etc
See look at what this man is doing, causing misery and disrupting innocent people lives :@

I've been saying this all along. Garth, or Gareth as a lot of dubliners are calling him, is not making this easy.If he cancels it will ruin his reputation here.
Council were right to cap it at 3 IMO. Greed caused this problem, nothing more nothing less.

Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Officially cancelled, according to Aiken promotions. Just saw the rte tweet.

RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
It is just me or is it a real Irish thing to do, sell tickets to something you don't have permission to do?
Personally I think all 5 dates should have been granted, surely the benefit to the economy as a whole would have outweighed all the negatives. Thankfully I don't live near the venue but I do live close to a sporting venue that causes traffic madness so I can sympathize with the residents but in fairness that the price to pay for living there

Yes in an ideal world but allowing 5 gigs would then set a precedent. What next 7 gigs?

My sister lives on foster terrace in ballybough, right beside the gate, they have enough with people once a week during the GAA season with people pissing and shittin down the lane behind the houses without 5 nights or that PLONKER,
They have a 1 car per house rule with permits and sometimes on match and gig days you can't get to my sisters with the law barriers everywhere,
Couple that with my brother in law now being disabled due to a crash and its a nightmare.
That's from the horses mouth so I don't really care about other aspects of it.
The GAA do ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING for the people of the area, FULL STOP.[/i]

RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
Lord henry montcharles would make a killing if was to step and offer slane as a venue
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
So we whine when planning regulations are ignored but as soon as Garth Brooks throws a strop we want to bin them.

Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I am delighted people think they can do what they like in this country aken promotions are a joke as are MCD. I had no tickets or intention to go. That guy on the mirror video is dead right. Gaa also think they can do what they want. Right decision in the end.

RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
All that revenue lost is a shame for all the local business's and hotels etc
€250million... So maybe €50million to the revenue? Wait until the next budget when they be looking to save €50million bit of noise and disruption over 5 days wont save that....

There is more to life than money chris,
It's a nightmare for residents and I'm glad he's not playin,
He's washed up everywhere else in the world the greedy bleeder, that's why he wanted the 5 nights here for anyway,
No one listens to the people that live there,
I'm delighted.

I agree with what you say (regarding money isnt everything) to a point, but the country has been shafted enough over the past 5/6 years....its nice to have a bit of money and not to be on the poxy bread line, dealing with that kind of stress!!
If the country wasnt in the state its in, maybe your family members would be able to move house if they arent happy where they are!! As Im sure they'd jump at the chance given your brother-in-laws unfortunate position!

I am on the poxy breadline as you say, so I know what IM talking about,
My sister hAs been planning a move out of there a while untill this accident occurred and my brother in law cannot work anymore due to him being paralysed,
I'm selling his e46 touring for him,
Some people are born and bred there too,and like living there, they recieve nothing for the hassle from the GAA which I think is wrong?
-
RE: Garth Brooks in Croke Park
I know money isnt everything in life, but everything in moderation - house, cars, money, holidays, etc, etc is what is nice to have in life...sometimes you dont get it all, or at times something gets sacrificed, but what I kind of meant was, money is a fairly high priority on folks lists, along with shelter, food and family.
I understand that people are born and bred there...but some people live near and airport....Im born and bred a stones throw from Dublin airport, planes fly over my house - should I get anything from the DAA? No, my parents choose to live there. There's good and bad with everything....Im close to the airport so when I get home from holidays, I dont have another 2 hours of a journey - happy days! People who live near Croke Park have good advantages........anyways; you get my point! Or not!?

By the same rationale I should try to organise a ban on all the crowds who come out on weekends and sunny days to beside where I live blocking the roads in, leaving their rubbish everywhere incl dirty nappies & used johnnys, causing fights etc etc but unfortunately you can't do that.
As a kid I remember coming home to find a bunch of nuns having a picnic on the grass one day. It's less entertaining when the driveway is regularly blocked.
If you like beside a public amenity there's a huge downside: the public will come and use it and probably ruin it in the process. Living in an area doesn't mean you own the area.
The promoter of the Garth Brooks concerts just did what they always do, sell as many tickets as they can "subject to licence". Given that this has never been a problem before you can't blame them for doing that. And as for selling tickets for 5 nights, that's not just a Scrooge like greed. It is called responding to customer demand and it's how we all live, by trying to make money.
What I don't understand is why this was let go on so long until it came to a head with 3 weeks to go. When the extra dates were announced but not yet on sale surely someone in DCC could have gotten on the phone to Paddy Aiken or the GAA and said "not this time lads" so there wouldn't have been a problem at all.
I'm over in the US again this week with work, yet again. Despite what it may feel like at home for the last year all I've heard over here is how well Ireland has done sorting itself out over the last few years. It's such a pity we still can't manage our own issues before they become internationally embarrassing problems, even over such a minor incident.
Nobody should feel proud of this, it's a disgrace all round.
