Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
OK, so we just have the E92 325i Auto coupe in our household at present. I work a lot from home and my wife usually takes the car unless I need it and drop her. From mid-Jan I will need to be in office 5 days a week so we need to purchase a second car...
Now the decisions...
1. Do I keep the E92 and purchase my wife a second car?
2. Do I let her keep the E92 and I purchase a second car?
3. Do we both get something different? (Hard choice as the E92 is 100% owned and owes us nothing really)
Other considerations:
- My wife will drive less than 150kms per week
- My wife only drives Automatic
- I will drive around 500kms per week
- My wife had back surgery in recent years so something more comfortable would be nice for her, although she does not complain and loves the car...
- Whatever the 2nd car is, it should not be a coupe, extra doors would be nice.
- My daughter is talking about doing her theory test and starting to drive...(If it ever happens!!! Probably not really a consideration...)
Budget
Well...say around €10k...however it may be possible to supplement that with a car loan if needed depending on the decision being made...
Make/Model
Well I would like to stay with BMW...however I would not be that keen on the E60 of all models, just not my cup of tea (however maybe that could change?).
An option (else an F10 for me? :hehe!:):
1 series: http://www.rbmotorcompany.com/viewanad.php?ad_id=1145589&r=
What would be the "best value for my euro" at present? Considering age, mileage, depreciation, ongoing maintenance, comfort (getting old...:tounge:), etc...
Thoughts/advice?

RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Surely an E90 320D fits the bill for yourself? I can't imagine an auto 325i would be economical for 500kms a week
-
RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
What would the current value be on the E92 Eddie? Just asking this, as Gar will be along shortly and will need some figures to go car shopping for you :)

I used to do that kinda level years ago when I first got my 325...was perfectly fine for every day. You'd want to be doing far more miles to bother with a daysul imo

Oops sorry man, not even awake yet :hehe!:
-
RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Not familiar with the dealer, but as with all these days, any car that passes my own preliminary checks will always be handed over to Valdas or Dave in Ballymount for a once over check on the ramp. Best few quid spent for that piece of mind, or better yet something to haggle price if wear and tear issues found.

So a quick check on DD for 2008 E92s shows quite a range in price from 12-20k, I guess for Private sale maybe somewhere in the middle 15k'ish?, dealer trade in would probably be 10k or something silly like that.
-
RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Very sellable car IMO - definitely go private sale route and add the proceeds to your budget. I suspect it won't hang around long at all. Cash is definitely king, even more so if your buying two cars together.

RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Thanks Gar, I would probably like to stick with BMW to be honest, have moved away once or twice in the past but always came back...:smiling:
I am not normally a fan of the E60 but the pic you shared does look nice.

RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
An e60 lci sport on spyders is a great looking car the lci interior is a lot nicer too imo, the big 7's look great in facelift form is well
A i6 lci e60 will cost you though and quite rare on these shores http://cars.donedeal.ie/view/8165166

That's nice...I was looking there and see there is not much stock about... [emoji25]
The 1 series linked might be worth a gander...

One of the lads I work with has an 07 VRS Diesel and he's had no problems with it and his father has the 2011 estate equivilent with no issues. If you're weary about leaving the Bavarian brand Skoda aren't all that bad too!

Re: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Honestly eddie the 1 series linked above does nothing for me looks performance or spec wise if i were going that route id just grab a 4 door mk v gti but thats just my imo i think with a 10k budget id be looking for a far superior car like the 7 theres probably 80k in the difference when new now they are similar in price but thats about it : )

I hear ya, not sure if a 7 is a little big for me and the colour combo selection does not appear great?
The trouble is finding something I would like in terms of colour and spec. Plus everything seems to be 2.0L diesel, hardly any petrols. Even to consider the E60 you linked, again that would be cleared I would be into early F10 territory although with a slightly higher mileage and only 2.0L.
Although maybe I am not looking in the right places?
I can push the 10k to some extent and could possibly supplement with a small loan for something worthwhile but whats on offer does not appear great. [emoji22]

So much harder now to find that elusive petrol model on the newer stuff
Are you looking to go over 2.0 pre 2008 or do you want a car 2008 or newer

2008 or newer ideally. Engine size over 2.0 would be nice, 6 cylinder. [emoji39]

RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Thanks Gar...
So what do you guys typically do when looking or buying a car from a dealer as they often seem to give 3+ months warranty.
Do you buy and then have the car checked by one of the Haus's trusted mechanics if anything major shows bring it back to be fixed or get it checked first? If first, how does that process work? Bring car to mechanic or mechanic to dealer?
-
Re: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Cant really help you with the above i bought my e36 and e39 just by looking them over myself and had valdas give the e46 a quick glance over
Id imagine if its under warranty try spot as much as you can before handing over the cash ask will they fix the lot to seal the deal (within reason of course)

I assume something with a fairly fresh NCT would be in half decent shape anyway.

You assume wrong [emoji1] it should be safe to drive though the brakes will be good the emissions ok and the headlights aligned
I dont put too much faith in that bit of paper sorry [emoji20]
Do your homework on the car ask here for common issues on that model and see if you can spot any on the day if buying privately get a mechanic to look it over
Would this tickle your fancy at all : )

Thanks guys...
Gar if that was an Automatic you never know...
I might take a look at this tomorrow if the mileage and ownership is correct.

I will then just let Conor or Valdas check it over and give it a full service.

Those wheels seem to be on a lot of e9x, were they an option?
They look like 4 csl fronts? Seen them on that low mile 325, the 335i with no history and a few others..

RE: Decisions, Decisions - 2nd Car...
Carzone is very good for 08+ cars too. The other half recently bought an 08 Volvo S40 R-Design and while there was nothing on DoneDeal or Adverts, there was a nice selection on Carzone.

I'd be buying a 5 door Golf GTi DSG, i know you said you didn't want to move away from BMW but you really should try one, an excellent all rounder, practical with the 5 doors, they are very spacious inside, quick and nimble yet very comfortable and under the radar too.
Had a manual for nearly two years and it really was flawless. You'd get a good one for 10k too.

Cheers hooch, even since I was a young lad a Golf GTI was my dream car but never owned one...since buying BMWs I always seem to just stick with them. My neighbour always has GTI DSGs for long time now...they do look good.

From what I'e heard I would steer clear of any of the VW/Audi DSG type boxes. They are more trouble that they are worth. Do a search and you'll read plenty about their trouble.

Relative to the numbers sold the problems tend to be minimal and as far as I know VW have recalls in place dealing with major issues. I've known a few guys running serious power through DSG boxes in both Edition 30 GTI's and R32's with no problems

Thanks Gar, that ticks the boxes in terms of spec and styling I think...ad mentions its on NI plates so guess VRT needs to be added.
Many moons ago (03/04) I looked at a C180 prior to buying an E39 520i but found it very cramped.

No worries, I appreciate all the effort and suggestions. I have ready access to 10k so that's the easy budget option, plus I need something by Jan 16th. If I want to go significantly higher in budget it would be February and not having a 2nd car for a few weeks would be a nightmare I feel.
