Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Hi everyone,
I felt it time to start the revised project thread of the Super4 E36 and get it posted up here first, over the coming days & weeks I shall go from start to current progress with it. Content shall be slightly different and the quickie snaps shall be made look a little more appealing :).
There will be where possible some "How To" guides thrown in along with some new current upgrades.....some marmite some not so marmite :D :D :D.
So to kick it off this is what the car was like when I first got it a year and a half ago, the car had a leaky boot (common on older E36's) so this was first on the agenda as I hate cars that leak!.
First day : After quick initial cleaning and mopping water :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well today turned out to be seriously nice so I decided to do a little bit more work on the front end seeing as I was home for the day :) I wanted to finish off cleaning up the trims on the bumper as well as the plastic pieces on the under side that bolt onto the wheel arches guards as these were painted blue also :frown
Here is how she looked when I started
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/365eba7e.jpg
I then proceeded to sand down any of the plastics that got caught in the dreaded Avusblau crossfire :D:D, and started painting. With it being such a nice day there was plenty of good drying time.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/0ffa36f3.jpg
All the plastic bumper trims were taken off, keyed and painted in satin black and I have to say i was delighted with the way they came up. You really wouldn't think they were resprayed. The reg plate plastic has a few nicks here and there but it's in pretty good shape all the same, and won't be changed yet.
Thanks for looking :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/95c3e9c4.jpg
As i looked back at the car in pieces i noticed something else that i and my rattle can could tackle so i proceeded to remove the kidneys and key them down... This paint has a hold on me :D:D:D:D
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9fb9825a.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/ccec2dfe.jpg
While they were drying I put the plastics back on my bumper and started snapping away, the bumper is starting to take shape slowly and all I need now it the plastic trim that covers the towing eye as this was missing when I got the car :frown, not too worry i'll pick one up shortly enough. Also needs to order up my fog lamp bracket....why do I keep forgetting to do this!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/701c0854.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/7a479134.jpg
Both kidneys done and back on the car
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/ef8579fe.jpg
Front bumper is just resting and not bolted back on yet as there is a little more fettling that I want to do before I bolt it all up, I think I am slightly OCD and definately very fussy about my cars. But that's a good trait right....??? :confused:D
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/a320118c.jpg
Need to sort out headlamp badly too as it really does take away from the car, and some M3 mesh as well.

Thanks for looking :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well picked up my Used Eibach Anti Roll Bars and bushes from a car that was being broken for parts, definately one of those rare finds indeed as the rest of the car was completely standard aside from a full set of Eibach Pro Springs which I will be going back for once they are out of the car :)
Here's just a couple of snaps as I couldn't wait to look at them when I got home this evening, as i'm sure many of you know already these bad boys have serious weight in them. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the car is like with them on. Before I fit I will be ordering new drop links all round for the car as well and may just order a new bush kit from Eibach too.....We'll see ;) I also managed to get a passenger side headlamp for €25.00 (:jaw-dropping:D) and it's spot on so looking forward to getting that fitted as it will really clean up the front of the car no end.

Thats it for now, there is plenty more although I need to be smart and conserve funds too so once the above is done I shall be slowing down unless more great exciting deals come up :)
Thanks for looking :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Today I stumbled across a ART & HOBBY shop so out of curiousity (and being impatient waiting for my Lamin-x to arrive) I decided to go in and ask if they had Yellow glass paint.....Few minutes later I was €7 lighter and had paint and brush.... So what else would one do at 00:19 on a Sunday morning??? Trial painting of the old headlamp lens :) :) :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/c1a984dc.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/c3c130c1.jpg
After 3 coats :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/12e7515e.jpg
Well after painting a spare headlight lens I had last night I decided that today I would get stuck in and do a full headlamp renew and get them upto scratch. I whipped out the lights, separated them and took them inside got out the newspaper and popped them onto the kitchen table. Out came the hobby cutting blade and away came the sealant :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/903e4e1c.jpg
Once all the sealant was off it was into the kitchen sink they went to bathe in some hot soapy water, the headlight glass got a good cleaning as did the plastics then it was onto the range they went for drying.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/512a8c06.jpg
While I was waiting for them to dry I started painting the main beam lenses with my yellow stain glass paint :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/ae8f238a.jpg
The lenses took three coats of paint and too be honest I think I might have like one or two more to go on but they're fine for now. Just me being finicky :shifty: It was then time to get the lenses back into the surrounds and get to sealing them back into place. I made the boo boo of putting the newly painted yellow main beam lens into the dipped beam slot but only realised this when I had put new black silicone sealant on!!!!!!! :eek:eek:mad:mad:jaw-dropping "B@ST@@@@@@@RD". A few minutes later and all was sorted and redone.....Calmies again :D:D
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/1900eabf.jpg
Re-sealed :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/7a586766.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9c2c1a53.jpg
Went a little mad on the headlight pictures......Sorry!!! :silly
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/c6ae2fa0.jpg
Oh and I am also putting amber corners on the car as I think they look / contrast better with the Ausblau paint work and the now yellow mainbeam lenses. The passenger side headlight is in much better nick than the driverside but it's okay as I have another one lined up....just means doing the mod on one lamp again.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Decided I would change my rocker cover gasket (As it's been leaking a while by the look of it) that I had bought earlier last week seeing as it was a nice day and not raining. All went fine apart from the rocker cover really being stuck on and pipe number 13 being soft, brittle and coming away from the rocker cover itself. Shall have to sort this tomorrow, trying to get as much done over these few days as I want to start driving the car and enjoying it ;)
A little oily :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/e321a7c4.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/2d014919.jpg
Figured my oil cap needed some love :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/db652b71.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9e21de4a.jpg
Also noticed my kidneys I had painted last week were already chipping yet I haven't even driven the car.....:confused:eek I couldn't figue this out until I heard a PIIIINNG when I looked around my nutty dog was chasing his ball and had kicked up stones onto the grill thus chipping the paint. So these came back off, I went and bought some tougher paint as the other stuff was coming off way to easily! :shifty:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/67e4ff3b.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/573b41a7.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/6f18a9d9.jpg
In between all that I decided I wanted to paint my rocker cover and yes you guessed right it is now black :), I had done my 166 engine the same and really liked how it came out so this was to get the same treatment although there shall be a very slight twist coming at a later date.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/ab8293e2.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9243517d.jpg
The rocker cover stud bolts were manky so they had to get some attention also :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/270b62ce.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/c1e72d0e.jpg
All done and back together :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/8c13dc56.jpg
Will be changing the setup on the spark plug cover very shortly as I don't like it and i rushed painting it due to being very hungry :) :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/d6751deb.jpg
[hr]
Last night before I went in from the cold after having a day at the bimmer I decided to do one more thing, it was a kind of spur of the moment thing. Basically I was looking at my new freshly painted rocker cover and decided the upper half of the inlet manifold really needed some paint too :D:D:D
So off it came in the pitch dark using the torch on my phone :) :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9993b6cc.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/5d9094d8.jpg
Then this morning when I got up it was time to get stuck back in again and get scrubbing and painting, it took no time at all last night to whip it off about 10-15 minutes then today about an hour scrubbing, painting and re-fitting. I was tempted to do the other half of the inlet but my sensible side took over as I thought to myself "it will never see the road if i keep pulling it apart" so I held back.... I'll get it at a later date, lol ;)
MY SHAGGED AND BRITTLE BREATHER PIPE :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/1ae5c91c.jpg
THIS WAS SERIOUSLY FECKED.... :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/7d09b0ba.jpg
I wanted to get the car driving today (which I did) so I went to my local diy and picked up the finest (:sarcastic) of braided garden hose as a temporary measure to replace the shagged breather pipe :). On it went and working a treat, although seeing as this is not resistant I wouldn't want to be leaving on for too long me thinks.

And all back together....ha ha for how long though??? :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/04960240.jpg
......Well that wasn't long, think I took a break for an hour then decided to go back at it and tackle the front ARB as I had picked up new drop links today. Totally forgot I had ordered the Meyle ones!!! when they arrive i'll have a spare set LOL,
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/eea5cfb9.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/125525fc.jpg
Cannot wait for the new discs to arrive then I can get my pads on, hard to see in the picture but the front discs have a nice lip on them indeed!! :

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Evening all,
Not a huge update really just more maintenance which shall be the case until I think it will be ready for fun stuff :). Today I picked up my new fuel filter and Gates Alternator belt, plan is to fit these tomorrow along with (FINALLY) my other amber corner lamp :) :) Woo Hoo.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/34289eb0.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/7a6e36f5.jpg
I decided I would fit my new Meyle HD top mounts this afternoon and whilst I was there I was going to fit my Eibach rear springs and Eibach ARB but I decided to hold off until I had new rear drop links which I shall pick up tomorrow along with standard rear discs. Once I have these I shall tackle the lot and install the EBC greens.
BEFORE :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/97d678d6.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/8b7dea37.jpg
SLIGHTLY KNACKERED : I'm really surprised these weren't knocking!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/822f058e.jpg

INSTALLED :

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/c3f0205f.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/45e2ae5c.jpg
With the rear partially stripped it really does make everything very easy :) the rear wheels I think were last put on by the HULK's mother and even when the wheel studs were loose and off the wheel took a lot of beating to get off the hub so they got a greasing before they were put back on.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/5a05d5da.jpg
Bumper trim shot in daylight : (repainted)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/9a427838.jpg
The other reason i didn't get stuck into rear springs etc this afternoon!!!! :(
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/0f323fc5.jpg
The rain arrived late this avo and hasn't stopped since, will be interesting to see if my leak in the boot returns!!! After looking at the weather it doesn't look good for tomorrow :( which is a pisser as I was hoping to get the rear springs, arb links, discs, fuel filter, Alt belt and pads on, guess we'll just have to see what happens. I also want to look over my power steering system also as it feels a little stiff at times etc so will check this out too. Wheel bearings a must at this stage also so think that'll be next task along with water pump and thermo.
Thanks for looking, :)
[hr]
Evening all,
Yet again a lovely day so it was a good time to put in the new alternator belt as the old one was riddle in little cracks, changed just in time by the looks of it. What a nice easy job today as well, getting the old belt off took all of 2 minutes and vice versa with putting the new one on. I decided while i have the airbox out i would do a little spring cleaning under the bonnet and just have a genral poke around :)
OLD BELT :

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/8caada08.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/2289ed7e.jpg
My power steering bottle unsurprisingly was completely caked in crud that i'd say has been building up over the last 13 years, so i gave it a very quick clean as i shall be doing a big job soon the power steering so will be more attentive then :)
YUMMMMY!!! :

With it all back together i go stuck into getting the engine bay a little bit cleaner, which only took a little while but that led to me washing the car then. In fairness it did need a wash as it was getting a little to dirty for my liking :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
NEW INNER DUST SEAL
STEPS I TOOK IN ORDER REMOVING THE OLD BEARING :
1. Slacken off wheel nuts slightly using the 17mm socket
2. Raise car of the ground, I did this by jacking up under the front subframe that way both wheels clear the ground
3. Finish removing wheel nuts then remove wheels, may need a kick or two if the wheels haven't be off in a while and put on with an airgun
4. Remove the black rubber caps covering the caliper slider bolts, using the 7mm allen key undo the caliper sliding bolts. The caliper should be looser now then remove brake pad wear sensor (PASSENGER SIDE ONLY in my case)
5. Using the 16mm ring spanner/socket undo the brake caliper bracket bolts
6. Caliper and bracket should all now pull away, remove old pads and cable tie the caliper up to the shock spring. DO NOT LET THE CALIPER HANG BY THE FLEXI BRAKE PIPE
7. Remove small brake disc screw, it was an allen key head also but can't remember size think it a 9mm
8. The discs in my case wwere being replaced so I gave them a good belt with a hammer to get them off, if you are keeping the discs go about removing them carefully so as not to damage them.
9. Remove front hub dust cover using flathead to prise it off.
10. The hub nut is now visible, using the flat head and a hammer tap out the notches in the hub nut, now get your 46mm socket and breaker bar and undo the hub nut.
11. Once fully undone you are now ready to remove the bearing and hub, in my case hand pulling power was all that was needed and the old bearing slid off leaving the inner bearing race still on the stub axle (you may need a bearing puller)
12. With my fish crow bar I was able to place it behind the inner race and prise it off the stub axle very easily
13. I then used the same pry bar to remove the inner dust seal which again came away without a fight. Stub axle is now fully visible for inspection
14. I removed my brake dust guard to give it a good clean, it's only head on by 3 x 10mm bolts
STEPS TAKEN IN ORDER PUTTING ON NEW BEARING :
1. Refit brake dust guard
2. Fit new inner dust seal, this taps in to place using a flat head or chizel
3. Grease stub axle shaft
4. Sit new bearing hub assembly onto stub axle, get it aligned straight and push in on as far as it will go, now get you 36mm socket and place it on the outer bearing race (NOT THE HUB ITSELF) and tap/hit with even hammer blows till the hub can go back no further
5. time to fit your NEW 46mm hub nut, tighten / torque to 213 ft/lbs
6. With the chizel and hammer notch the new hub nut so it pushes the nut edge in to the stub axle cut outs (this secures the hub nut from coming off)
7. Refit brake discs, refit brake discs screws with copper grease
8. Refit brake caliper and pads
9. Refit brake pad wear sensor
10. Check over everything you have done at lease twice
Hope this will be of some help to people on here, if I have missed anything let me know as I said I did this inbetween showers so could well have missed a step. I did miss taking some more pictures of the bearing itself installed, I have now to put up 60 miles of run in on my new pads a discs which I always do before i can do some spirited driving again :) :) Here are some pictures that I did manage to get today when the sun was out.

As soon as I did get the new bearing installed the feckin sun came back out for a short while which was nice and allowed me to finish without looking at the sky every minute.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Hi to all,
When I got back this morning there was a small parcel waiting for my attention. Instantly knowing what it was I opened it up and started to snap away :), I went for a Canbus-Pro 6000K set for my car and naturally a H1 fitment. The build quiality of these is excellent with the ballast tanks being very robust indeed and well upto the elements that an engine bay might see. Wiring is also of excellent quality with great tight sealing connections.
The HID bulbs themselves fitted very snug and without any issue at all (JUST NEVER TOUCH THEM), wiring them up took all of about 15-20 minutes if even then another 15 minutes sorting out the back light covers so as I could retain using them. Again this was a very simple and neat process. Even with it not dark yet I am very happy with the color they produce although in the pictures they have a greenie hue to them in real life this is not the case, instead they produce a very enchanting crisp white light with an extremely subtle blue hue around the edges. Well I shall let the pictures do the talking :

FITTING PROCESS : 30 minutes max for a competent diyer. If not leave it to someone hwo knows.

I JUST DID A SOFT WIRE UP TO BEGIN WITH TO MAKE SURE ALL WAS WORKING AS IT SHOULD :

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Got some ramp time late this afternoon so got stuck into the few jobs mentioned above, started with the inner and outer tie rods which were no problem then onto remove the lower front wishbones. The passenger side one came away quite easily but the driver side took a lot of smacking and prying to get it to release. Eventually it gave allowing me to remove them and start pressing out the ball joints etc.
As I suspected my inner tie rods were well shot so really looking forward to driving this when complete and tracked. Few more bits to finish off tomorrow, and may even get the rear wheel bearings done.....but we'll see :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Yet another fine morning so out I went to take full advantage of it and have a look behind the rear bumper to see what lurks beneath :). Upon inspection I noticed water was coming in from the rear bumper mounting holes so first order of business was to seal these a little better.
BUMPER OFF : Thankfully no rust or rot.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
So getting back on track here and trying to get this project up to current date, some more previous work carried out :).
Yesterday with the car being soooooo dirty I jack up the arse in the air and got washing the rear arches and underside, all much and crud was removed from inside the rear quarter lip and anywhere it shouldn't be. The car then got a nice wash in lots of lovely smelling Meguiars suds using the Megs grit guard bucket system.

With it being another lovely morning THIS MORNING I took advantage and went out to get stuck into fitting my front fogs which was made possible by Gus247 for very kindly sending me two used front fog light brackets he had spare. Hug thanks to you mate it's much appreciated :). My fog lights are very badly stone chipped so I have just ordered new Yellow ones that shall be fitted but for now these ones shall do just fine.
While I had the bumper off I had a good look at the back of it to see could I spot the reason for the bumper not sitting flush on the drivers side, and low and behold there it was. The bumper bar is kinked where it mount to the impact absorber on the driver side. So next on the list is a new bumper bar for sure as this is bugging the crap out of me.

Hi to all,
When I got back this morning there was a small parcel waiting for my attention.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Some parts I ordered for customers and myself arrived today so without any hesitation I was out fitting my new front strut brace and oil filler cap, the brace is well made with great adjustment all round and looks (I think) very well in the M44 engine bay giving it a beefier look. The oil filler cap is basic enough and I bought it as the original on there was just a bit bland so this will do just fine for now. Again the fit is very good with a nice tight seal forming when closing the cap. The other parts to arrive were the front lower lollipop wishbone Powerflex bushes and Meyle HD wishbone joints which I shall tackle later on in the week, my fan tool also arrived so I shall now get stuck into the waterpump, thermo and housing seeing as I have the tool. I know I could have made something up but i'm a little anal when it comes to tools and having the proper one for the job. :D

At this stage I have quite a few parts to get fitted and may need even more by tomorrow when the car fails it's NCT...... I have not prepared the car at all for the NCT just going to run it through as is and see what is said then go from there. I also treated the car to 3 months tax last week too......(getting old and responsible) :D or old and stupid :) :) lol.
Thanks for looking :D

With the car failing the NCT on the bulb being blown in the centre brake light and SRS airbag light being on it was now a good time to do something with the rear parcel shelf as this has faded in the sun light as well as the third brake light as it was bloody filthy.
So after ten minutes the rear parcel shelf was out and getting hoovered, the brake light was washed, compounded and waxed :) and refitted with a new bulb.
The parcel shelf has already taken 1 can of AG black dye and whilst it looks better it's not as good as i'd like it to be so it shall do for now but a new rear parcel will be done the line I think. It was also a great oppurtunity to clean the back window and get right in to the corners also as this too was manky.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Evening guys n gals,
Hope you all had nice weekends whether is was crazy parties or quiet tinkering with the cars whilst having a nice cool beer, for me my objective this weekend was to get my airbag light sorted so as I could get back down to the NCT centre first thing Monday morning and collect my NCT pass disc :)
So I got stuck in, firstly I disconnected my battery seeing as I would be removing the airbag steering wheel. Once this was done it was then onto removing the 3 spoke SRS wheel itself. This is a relatively easy job to do with the centre airbag and horn section only being held in by 2 allen key bolts at the back of the 3 and 9 O'clock spokes.
Once these are undone the airbag should gently wiggle out towards you, when it's out is shall be connected by 2 wires one being the ground and the other being the charge/live wire. Unplug these and remove altogether, place the SRS piece on the ground with the horn facing the sky. This is done so that if it did go off near anyone then they would get the SRS airbag in the face and not the metal housing on the back.
Undo the steering wheel bolt think it was a 14 can't remember now :), With the steering wheel removed (3 spoke non height adjustable wheels need to be removed for dash cluter removal) its then on to the dash cluster, this is only held in by 2 torx head screws and once these are removed then the cluster is ready to come out by simply pushing on the bottom edge of the cluster it releases the top edge out towards you allowing you to wiggle it free. At the back there are 3 plugs on them is a slide clip, push in the very subtle "button press" and slide the clips up then pull plug socket out. When all 3 are done the cluster is free to come out of the dash.
THE REMOVAL :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/7157dce1.jpg
PLACE FACE UP ALWAYS : And outside the car
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/b2be5433.jpg
My plan is to remove my airbag steering wheel altogether once I have the NCT and the whole SRS system and replace it with another steering wheel, so I just needed the light out for the visual re test. So it was time to wire the SRS light upto the ABS+TCS lights at the back of the cluster so when I turned my ignition on all my lights including ABS,TCS and SRS would come on then go out together seeing as the ABS light was now the on off switch for the SRS light :) After running into very minor issues we got it all working, one of the issues was that even when the SRS airbag light bulb was removed the SRS logo kept lighting up............ :facepalm :facepalm..... we couldn't figure this out until we realised those intelligent and over engineering buffs at BMW had put in a tiny LED bulb above the SRS bulb so that if there was an airbag fault and the SRS bulb were to burn out then the LED would kick in and illuminate the SRS light albeit a bit dimmer.
LED BULB HIDING IN PLASTIC TUBE : Hard to see

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/1d181f7f.jpg
With that problem sussed and everything properly wired up correctly and safely it was then time to test it properly to make sure worked as it should..... fingers x'd.........
PERFECT :

Off to collect the cert tomorrow fingers crossed nothing goes a miss on the way down...... gotta love cars and the challenges they give us :thumbsup

Well took the car to an underground for some happy snapping and while my mate got the tripod setup I took some quick snaps to get acquainted with my surroundings. I got about 4 pictures in and all the lights in the underground went out.........Baaaaaaaaastard!!!!! Oh well at least now I know they go out at 11pm at night :(
I'm hoping to get some ramp time in my mates garage this week and get the few jobs done that I need to, so hopefully by the weeks end I sall have a good bit done and get stuck into ordering a few more needed parts like rear boot seal and think i'm going to have to change the driver side headlamp glass as all those stone chips are bugging the hell out of me!

Once the car got a good wash I decided I wanted to remove some of the scratches on the boot lid as they had been there since I bought it, so out came the variable Sealey polisher and Megs polish pad followed by some Megs retail range paint cleaner.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...523_234630.jpg
I only did 1 quick pass on the boot lid as it wasn't in the shade and not a great time to be doing it with the heat on the paint, I also did a quick pass on the wing and was happy to see all the scratches lifting although there is more to be done. So if tomorrow is as nice then I shall be out early with the car in the shade and give it a full machine polish, wax and exterior detail.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well yesterday I got cracking on finishing off some machine polishing of the car, seeing as it was such a nice day it would have been rude not to :). I pulled the car into the shade under a big tree in the garden and left it for half an hour for the paint to cool somewhat.....great excuse for a nice cuppa Jo :) Before I got started I realised I was missing my correct backing plate for mounting the Meguiars pads onto so I had to do some forward thinking :D :D.......risky but it worked :
MEGS PADS VELCRO'd :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/853355ad.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/dcc7b37b.jpg
I had washed the car the day before so I just ran over it with a micro fibre to get any dust off (wasn't much on it) then got cracking. First step was Meguiars paint cleaner (retail range) on a dampened Meguiars pad # : WDFF7 to get rid of the heavy swirls and scratches, this did very well although some of the scratches are quite bad and by right I should have 2500 grit wet sanded the car then polished up using Meguiars wool pad # : WWHC7 and then the WDFF7. Anyways I was lazy and skipped a step :), I machined a panel at a time and removed with a Meguiars micro fibre cloth and then onto the next panel. Another short cut I took and is by no means recommended was to not mask up the rubbers and plastic mouldings on the car, instead I ran the polisher over them all and they came up a treat.
SOME OF THE SCRATCHES :
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...i/d50a56a3.jpg

Once I had gone over the car with the heavier cutting pad and paint cleaner it was then time to start again using Meguiars polish (retail range) and Meguiars pad # : W-8006, the car got one complete pass using this setup which removed what was left of the finer swirls and light scratches. Again I did panel by panel and used a fresh Meguiars micro fibre cloth to remove any remaining polish. I also ran over the headlights with this pad and polish and it really made a huge difference especially to the driver side lamp which was really bad.

This was also done panel by panel and removal with a Meguiars micro fibre. In total I used 4 Meguiars micro fibres and 2 applicator pads. To top it all off I used some Autoglym Rapid Detailer spray to remove some of the messfrom machine polishing although there was very little really.

Well last Saturday evening on my way home I noticed my car was getting slower........and slower.............................and slooowwwwwer until . It was barely free wheeling at all, so I pulled into the drive got out and put my hand on the driver side rear wheel which wasn't hot so onto the passo rear wheel which was also fine, then the passo front wheel....which again was fine and finally around to the driver side front wheels which was feckin scaulding so upon looking in at the disc it was obvious the caliper had seized. So on I deceded to go out for a couple of pints and worry about it on Sunday, however due to being slightly diseased from drink I gave the car a miss on Sunday and got stuck in today instead when my head was more in the game.
So I got stripping, off with the wheel then the caliper, I got my caliper piston wind back tool onto it to see would the piston budge and it did for all of 1mm then came to a hault. Eventually it free'd it up enough so I could get the piston out and strip off the dust cover and interior caliper seal. The piston is pretty pitted and where it had been pitting all the rust clumped up in the dust cover and was stopping the piston from going back into the caliper after I would release my foot off the brakes. So everything was cleaned, piston was sanded and all lubed up and put back together, it seems to be fine now so I shall just keep an eye on it for now and give some serious considerations now to a caliper upgrade :D

Everything is all now back on the car and it really free wheels now...... like huge difference, I think this might have been happening on and off since I have the car as it really is a very different car to drive now.... Hopefully I shall get a few more months out of these calipers and then look into the caliper upgrades for sure.
Thanks for looking as always :)

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well its a while since I have posted in the projects section as there have not really been any worthy mods being done.....until today as it was coilover day :). Seeing as I now supply JOM coilovers I wanted to trial run a set to see what they are like as a low budget entry level coilover. Upon opening the box and pulling everything out and having a good look all over I was impressed even if the rear adjusters felt a little cheap in the hand they are not bad at all once fitted. The height adjustment tool for the coilovers it must be said is pretty poor but more so for when you have to adjust the rear suspension height as the silly pivot setup is slightly frustrating to work with.
Now enough with the moaning after all they are a €250.00 coilover kit, all in all I am very impressed with the quality of this kit for the money, once fitted and adjusted I was out for a drive to see how it all felt, at this point I would also like to mention that I fitted new KYB front suspension mounts as mine were pretty shot and I did not feel like taking out the shocks again to do the mounts. I had previously replaced the rears with Meyle HD items along with the Z3 reinforcement plates.
Before fitting could even start I had to work around the problem of getting off my BMW lock nuts without the lock nut tool as I seemed to have misplaced it :confused, anyway after a couple of minutes pondering and eyeing it up I took my small half inch drive extension and hammered it into the lock nut then proceeded to loosen them with the breaker bar.....each lock nut took 5 mins max to get off. Happy days :thumbsup

At this point i decided to take out one of a set of the BMW wheels I accquired during the previous week and sit it into place, the wheel is 16" x 7.5 with ET19. Needless to say it sits out pretty far but hopefully I can get it to work with some Falken tires and a bit of a stretch (not that I have much to stretch with). Need to look in to tire sizes now and start organising new boots.

Sorry there are not more pictures of the fitting process however I shall get up some more over the coming days. I was also changing suspension in another E36 today so time did not permit lots of picture taking. I took the car out for a spin this evening and have to say from what little I have driven it I am fairly impressed. The ride is not overly harsh by any means and the car feels much tighter. Over the coming weeks time shall tell alot once they have settled and at that stage I shall report back with more information on them. Hopefully the rear has settled by then.....not really liking the drag look :)

Hi all, I managed to sell my 16" style 32's and they are being collected this weekend so I thought i'd better pull the finger out and get some wheels on the car this week. The Motorsports ended up being the option I went for as these only needed two tires and purse strings are being kept as tight as possible. So I got two Conti's thrown on to the rear today and all four wheels balanced. I have to say going from a 225 tire to a 215 tire has made a nice difference to the driving of the car for sure. it feels that bit more responsive and less tramlining too which is nice.
Any ways I shall let the quick pics do the talking :) :) Car needs a good washing.....

I'm just in the door now from working on the car (0100am), was in with a mate of mine this evening giving him a dig out in the workshop as he was bombarded and going on hols tomorrow so everything was rush rush. Needles to say rush rush caught up with him when he reversed into my car!!, it's not bad by anymeans and we all know shit happens and I'm not too bothered......just typical that it happens before Sundays show.
Work carried out on my car today was :
New Meyle HD wishbones with ball joints but without lollipops
New 501 side light bulbs.....much brighter now thank god.
Went at my inner tie rods as the locking washers are slightly worn so they had vibrated loose....Not ideal :sarcastic (Just did passenger side tonight, driver side tomorrow)
Painted my other 2 alloys
Collected a spare Motorsport alloy from a fellow BMW-Driver.net member (orientblau) for free might I add. Thanks mate. :)
Will get up some pictures in a day or two.......i'm wrecked so off to la la land I go.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Finished off my wrinkle finish rocker cover today, thanks to Larry K for the VHT wrinkle paint.
It took a while with not having a fantastic heat source at home to back it in as it didn't fit in the oven ( I tried). Anyway I managed to get it all done and refitted, the paint is touch dry but still soft underneath but this shall soon be sorted after a good drive. I also changed the spark plug oil seals so hopefully no more plugs bathing in oil. New Iridiums are on the way and should be here this week then I'm just waiting on the leads to arrive.
I have more to do with the intake manifold now as it doesn't look right so shall take care of this in a week or two.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
This job is a doddle on the E36's and easily doable for any diy home mechanic with a max time of 20-30 minutes without a ramp. The front end in particular on my car still felt a loose and rattly, this has now pretty gone since changing them and made the car nice amd quiet again :).

I am using a very strong paint scrapper and hammer which is doing the job nicely so far to be honest. I thought this was going to be a lot harder (spoke to soon). It will most likely be a pig of a job on the driver side now I have made the previous statement:D, Oh well.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well with the rear tires arriving yesterday all I was waiting on was the wheel stud conversion kit. Hoping it would arrive this morning but unfortunately it didn't, so with not being able to wait any longer wheels and tires were bungled into the Super4 E36 van and off I went to see Richie in Pro Parts to get them fitted.
Whilst I was happy the fronts would have enough clearance I was dubious about the rears feeling it was going to be to close for comfort to the outer arch.
The passenger side front was done first and then passenger side rear next. Wheels were mounted and now came the moment of truth taking the car off the jacks. The end result was plenty of clearance front and rear with no need for arch rolling of any kind :).
The drive back was bliss as my old tires were well worn and a little too dodgy to be driving on any more. The new tires have certainly transformed how the car feels and drives. All in all I'm a happy camper and it was worth the wait.
So no more yapping time for pictures and thanks again to Richie in Pro-Parts for all the help.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
It's BC Racing coilover time for the little "is" :)
I sold the JOM's after having them for a year I found them to be excellent for instant low and very comfortable. I would highly recommend these for people on a budget as they are great value for money.
In the mean time whilst waiting for the BC's to arrive I have been trailing a used set of HSD MonoPro's (up for sale soon) and they are also very comfortable with lots and lots of adjustment everywhere from height, damping, and castor & camber. The BC's arrived today so out with the HSD setup and in with the BC's.

More pictures to come :)
[hr]
So I finally managed to get some time to finish off the coilover update :), I finished installing them the other night just not time to update with more pictures.
With the BC's being lighter compared to previous setups I have noticed braking over all has improved as well as the overall tightness of the car. I have them set quite high right now but shall address this during the coming week along with the rebound, a full 4 wheel alignment shall ensue once I get the rear end apart and all poly bushed as this along with RTAB's needs doing badly.
So here are some more pictures :)

After this it was time to move on to doing the x-brace, being fresh and new to all things BMW I didn't realise I had a poverty spec E36 meaning the front subframe did not have the threaded nuts in place from the factory to bolt this up. So I need to get some nutserts into the subframe to complete the job properly. Hopefully these shall arrive next week.
I did manage to get 4 out of 8 bolts in so it's not going anywhere but probably not doing its job in the best possible way either.

whilst it will protect the underside it will also help add some much needed down force at higher speeds as I find it can get quite light up front.

Some more progress was made this evening as I relieved EddieM3 of his K-sport BBK setup. Arrived to Eddie's and we started the swap over, I swore I would never do any more jobs on cars on the ground!!!! Oh well all was good and everything went smoothly with the only alterations needing to be made were to by car where the braided lines meet the metal lines.
The hole the K-sport line needed to sit into was to small so some drilling was required, then a bleed all round was done and off I went. I may in time swap out the servo for an M3 item etc but for now they are very good and once cleaned off will only improve.
An evening well spent in good company, here are some pictures but only a few as we wanted to get done and dusted.
The K-sport calipers themselves are incredibly light coming in at around 6lbs each!!!!

Decided today I would install the new Schmiedmann Adjustable Short Shifter I have had sitting on a shelf for months now. Removal of the old shifter is very simple and straight forward with it being out in about 5-10 minutes. Installing the new one isn't quite so quick however due to the adjustable eye at the bottom of Schmiedmann shifter having 2 little bearing cases pressed into it rather than the traditional plastic/nylon bush.
The selector took some time and cursing :mad::mad: to get it into place as it's a very very snug fit. For this particular short shift I would not recommend doing this on the drive way at home as there will not be enough room in order get the eye on slid onto the selector rod. A ramp is a MUST for this install. Once it was in it was a case of start the car check for gears and then drive it.
Driving it showed up that I needed to further adjust the shifter to pull it up away from the prop shaft as it was rubbing it very slightly. To be honest there are easier kits to buy and install however I wanted some thing that whilst it would give me a shorter shift (which it does, very short) it would also have the gear knob sitting taller than stock so as it's that bit closer to the steering wheel. All in all I am very happy with it and love how short the shift is !!!!

OLD SHIFTER IN PLACE :

REMOVE INSULATION AROUND THE SHIFTER, PULL UPWARDS ON THE RUBBER BOOT/SLEEVE. IT WILL BE TIGHT BUT SHALL GIVE :

NOW FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR UNCLIP THE SELECTOR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ORIGINAL SHIFTER, DO NOT LOOSE THE CLIP AND PLASTIC WASHERS. I REPLACED MINE WITH NEW PLASTIC WASHERS THAT CAME WITH THE KIT :
Sorry I didn't get a picture of this stage :(
GET TWO FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVERS AND CROSS THEM OVER EACH OTHER LIKE SO, TWIST 90 degress CLOCKWISE TO RELEASE THE TWO PLASTIC TABS ON THE WHITE CUP :

ONCE THEY RELEASE SIMPLY PULL UPWARDS AND THE SHIFTER UNIT SHALL COME OUT AND WILL LOOK LIKE THIS :

NEW SHIFTER INSTALLED :

For reinstalling the new shifter be sure to grease everthing up, I installed new plastic washers and a new OEM shifter cup. Sit the new shifter and plastic cup into place, get your two screw drivers and cross them over like before and twist clockwise until the 2 tabs on the cup seat into their places in the holder. These are at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Now get under the car and push the rod into the shifter, don't for get a plastic washer on either side following by the clip at the end of the bar going through the shifter. There is a groove there for it to sit into. Once this is done replace the rubber boot and insulation followed by the gear shift gaiter and hey presto. If you do not know what you are doing then hand this job over to a mechanic, this guide is for reference only and I am not responsible for the work you carry out to you own car.

Hi Folks,
Long time not on here, a mix of being away for hols, moving into a new work shop and having limited internet access are the main causes :). The workshop is slowly coming along and hopefully in the coming weeks will take shape. Once in I can run everything under the one roof which should make internet communication better for all and result in being more efficient :).
Not much has happened with the E36 of late due to not having the time (good complaint). As some or many may already know I sold the DASC to a customer and installed it on his car. I may hear you asking "WTF?" however I found the holy grail of mods for the little M44 4pot which is a brand new never used DASC kit still in all its original packaging and ready for plucking :D :D. I shall let the one picture I do have do the talking, unlike the last DASC this one shall be getting fitted and very soon indeed :).

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well the car failed it's NCT on Friday evening thanks to the ABS & TC lights coming on..... this has been coming for a while to be fair. Did a diagnostic which came back as "error code 71" = ABS Pump. So need to get this sorted then she is back for a free retest.
All in all I am happy out as everything else came up spot on. So onto the next thing which is I did some dipping today as a tester to play around with the product I shall be adding to the inventory. So what better guinea pig to use than my own car :D :D.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Hi Folks,
So far I managed to get the starter out and sent off for a refurbing etc, whilst this was being done it was a case of not being able to very much other than removing the steel fuel return line and replacing it with fuel hose as this is rerouted up to the rising rate fuel pressure regulator and then from there into the fuel rail itself. I gave the flywheel a look over whilst the starter was out and did some mocking up of the Downing intake manifold to make sure it was not going to cause problems for the new water hose that has to run directly under it.

So with running around half the country looking for an E46 320d saloon for a friend I have not had much time at all to really get stuck into the charger completion. Yesterday evening was Kells to look at a "MINT " 2004 320d, when I say I spent 25 seconds looking at it I am 100% honest it was such a ball of sh@t I just walked away without saying a word, got in the van and drove off .
Today we went to Roscommon to look at this car http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sal...w-320d/5682697 all I would say is anyone in the market for a 320d it's no where near as clean as it looks or the owner says.
So that was left there gladly and back to Wicklow it was, whilst on the way back I got a call to go look at a 2002 320d with reasonable mileage, condition (apparently) and price so went to Dublin viewed the car that turned out to be a lovely grey/maroon color (can't remember name) and drove it home. Needless to say that ended the 2 week car hunting saga. In-between the running around here is what I have managed to get done.....

Well I managed to get some more done to the car over the weekend thankfully, one of the other jobs that needed to be done outside of installing the SC kit was to swap out the M44 Alternator for an M42 item due to the M44 part missing a very vital thread hole for one of the SC idler pulleys to bolt into.
This is by no means a hard job and I was lucky to have had an M42 Alternator there otherwise it meant things were going to get delayed more so.
Below you shall see in the pictures the very small differences and the reason for having to do the Alternator swap in the first place.
M44 & M42 Alternators :

http://i1264.photobucket.com/albums/...ps71253d37.jpg
BELT PULLEY INSTALLED :

NEXT TRIAL MOCK FIT : Everything looking good so far.
http://i1264.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4abf9a4e.jpg
http://i1264.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4e1f7180.jpg
With the SC temporarily fitted I had to make sure the fuel lines were going to be free enough and in the case of the metal line and have enough slack in the case of the rubber return fuel line, once I was happy with these and tested fitted to the fuel rail I taped them together (otherwise the rubber line goes walkabout) and moved on to check out the fitment of all the other hoses and dipstick chute. The dipstick chute is a PITA as it does not line up exactly right with the new Aluminium bypass valve elbow so some reluctant bending is needed in order to get this bolted and secured to the elbow.
Next jobs were :
Fit throttle body
Relocate IRV sensor (No longer fits on the throttle body)
Route vapour canister line
Route vacuum lines to and from bypass valve
Reconnect and mount DISA valve
Other fidgety bits
But it was time for some coffee before any more work was done as it was now 00:00 Friday night and I had not had a straight run at this install from the moment I started so I wanted to make as much of a dent in it as possible and get it finished due to the car being my daily driver.

RE: Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Well finally got the SC all plumbed and up and running since the last post I made, got it finished on Monday evening after all the messing with looking for cars last week.
I left off at the last post with having to relocate the IRV and do some more pipe work as well as fit the throttle body, Induction kit, and lots of other smaller pieces in order to get it completed. So at 6pm on Monday evening I decided to bite the bullet and get it finished after all it is my daily driver.
So here we go with the 2nd last if not last update on the SC install :). I needed to mount the bracket in the picture that came in the kit so as I could then bolt the MAF support bracket in also. Downing have pretty much thought of everything and 98% of it is spot on too, the only things which are a slight let down were their solution around the DISA which was to tie to the dip stick chute and also the problem most DASC owners complain about which is the throttle cable layout. In time I shall address these and see can a more appropriate solution be found.
ONE OF 2 SUPPORT BRACKETS FOR THE MAF :
http://i1264.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9a9d2dc6.jpg
In the next picture you can see what I mean about the DISA being cabled to the dipstick chute and this in their install manual was listed as one of the last things to do after the charger is in along with the bypass elbow etc etc. I was raging I didn't pay attention to the manual earlier on the conversion and spotted this as I could have installed it way before the end.....oh well it's in now :).
DISA VALVE IN BEHIND THE ALTERNATOR :

IRV VALVE GETTING RELOCATED AND PLUMBED :
http://i1264.photobucket.com/albums/...ps343e5390.jpg
Once all the pluming and connecting of plugs was done a the more rear of the engine/bypass elbow I was moving toward the front cross member, after a little bit of fiddling and swapping the M44 intake below for an M42 item it meant that I would not have to cut and extend the MAF sensor wiring harness....NIIIIICE!!!!. Once this was installed it was onto fitting the K&N kit and air temp sensor. Once these were done the MAF was twisted around until the MAF support bracket fitted snuggly to the smooth underside and held everything firmly in place.
GETTING THERE :) :

Super4 E36 318isc demo car
Hi folks,
So the last of the install was completed on Friday evening with little remaining to be done, the IRV relocation was completed then followed securing the MAF bracket and getting the intake end of things finished and secured properly.
Jubilee clips were put nearly every bar some vacuum hoses running from the downing inlet manifold to the RRFPR, these are a very snug fit however today I picked up some very small jubilee clips to fit to them tomorrow to be safe that there will be no leaks. Cable tie ends were trimmed and then it was onto getting the top fan cowling cover fitted, this need to be trimmed down in order to clear the new prouder sitting top rad hose. Out came the dremel (great little tool) and got to work trimming down to size trial fitting after each adjustment so as to ensure a reasonably snug fit yet clearing the hose.
Once this was done it was time to fill up the rad and bleed the cooling system, then came the first start. She started perfectly after the second turn once fuel had made its way to the fuel rail and into the injectors. The suck from the K&N filter was something and in its self sounded menacing. I need to get a cold air feed up to the filter and hopefully shall get to this at the weekend. I am in two minds about either keeping the induction kit setup albeit changing it to a GREEN filter or getting the complete stock air box back in there with two cold feeds going to it. But that shall be for another day. I have done 70 miles in it so far and tbh has taken it easy until I get to around 150 (just me being careful). The same was done with Harry's conversion.
So here is the rest of the pictures that I had managed to take before it was time to get the skates on and wrap up for the night. It could be a placebo effect however to me the front end certainly feels heavier which in turn feels nicer, however like stated could be placebo effect as I had lifted the whole SC assembly in to the car and it was certainly heavy.

Next jobs : Interior & replacing the steering shaft flex disc as it's knackered big time. After that then small things like tail light seals, new front windscreen and rubber, exhaust and sunroof delete.
Thanks for looking :)
Nothing major regards an update, I managed to get the standard OEM air feed back in as well as a secondary one which shall only be temporary until I get my mesh in etc then I will put more effort into it. It has definitely made a difference now on the open road so was much needed. I shall try and sort an exhaust before xmas if I can and then go from there. So much to do :).
