ccv or something more serious?
looking for peoples opinions on this.
had car serviced in july and after 950 miles of driving the low oil level light came on.
ccv was highlighted as a possible cause of my high oil consumption so i will be having it done as soon as the funds are available.
added a litre of oil to the car and today after 350 miles of driving the low oil level light has come on again.
could it still be the ccv valve needs replacing or is it something worse/more expensive?
having car checked for oil leaks tomorrow but i dont think there are any.
any advice or previous experience of this would be great
cheers
jim.
ccv or something more serious?
Did you check the oil level this and the last time the light came on or just add oil?
Regards,
Andy
RE: ccv or something more serious?
i checked it the last time andy and it was just above minimum level.
i will check the level tomorrow before i add any oil.
i added 1 litre of oil the last time.
RE: ccv or something more serious?
I would have thought a litre for 950 miles was normal enough. They drink the stuff, mine does.

i could live with 950 miles between top ups but this time its only been 350 miles and the low level light has come on again.

What car's this on?

bmw e39 525i sport.
no not done any of them .
had a good look and cant see any signs of oil leaks in the engine bay.
i am hoping it is the ccv which i am having done when funds allow.
hope its not something like valve stem oil seals.
RE: ccv or something more serious?
Happened my 520i, was Silver and when it came to the end the back would be covered in black around the exhaust, anytime I polished the exhaust it was black after short time.
Think it turned out to be valve stems, I done all the above gaskets and it actually got worse, presume it was because more pressure on the actually stems?
Some of the gaskets are cheap so do them while your doing the CCV.
Take it to Valdas he has had a fair few e39's himself.

thanks for the advice chris.
any idea on a rough cost to do the valve stems?
when i mentioned the problem to my mechanic ccv was the first thing he said as he has done a few .
he went over the car with a fine tooth comb when i bought it and he found no oil leaks.
i will get him to price up doing the valve stems if the ccv isnt the problem.
hope to have it done on the next few weeks .
RE: ccv or something more serious?
I sold the car (and told the chap it was using oil) he was te one who took it to Valdas i think maybe €700 but its 3 years back now so could be way off sorry.
Its worth doing they are a great car im sick i didnt do it and keep her! The CCV parts are maybe €130-150 from main dealer from memory, try Frank Keanes on here they are doing good discount too.
RE: ccv or something more serious?
What grade of oil is in it ?
Is it leaking heavily leaving patchs on the ground
Is it smokey at all
Last time you topped it up did you put the full litre in did you dip it afterwards were was it on the mark on the dipstick

5w 30 llo4 spec.
its not leaking any oil on the drive that i can see.
no doesnt seem smokey at all.
i put the full litre in but i cant remember where it took it up to on the dipstick .
i will get the ccv done and go from there.
Re: ccv or something more serious?
Start using the dipstick it might have been well below the minimum point on it when you added a litre you probably could of added more
Since changing from castrol to millers iv noticed a considerable drop in oil consumption over 18 months still likes a drop just not as much i dont keep records though just got used to it and always keep a litre in the boot
Do your ccv if its still the same try moving to a 10w40 oil
A quick simple fix for m54 oil consumption doesn't exist unfortunately [emoji20]
RE: ccv or something more serious?
i checked the dipstick before i added the 1 litre of oil and it was just above the minimum level .
i am nearly certain i checked after i put the oil in but i cant remember where it was.
i am going to top it up tomorrow.
