E92 Search (and engine choices!)
No harm in throwing this out for discussion.
E92 in a spec I want are few and far between. Ideal car is a 325i M Sport, don't think I can be too fussy at this stage on colour, so anything goes, well nearly.
Given the struggle to find a decent clean 6 pot M Sport, I've today begun searching diesels too. Again 6 pots. Anyone any first hand experiences of the E92 325d ? I'm wary of the motortax, would much prefer to spend it on the petrol equivalent, but I may not have that choice if nothing shows up soon.
A couple options I've got are to:
- (re) hire a car in Feb
- buy bangernomics to tidy me over and buy me some time (although I really don't think there are many of what I want in the country for sale!)
- up the budget to 14k absolute max
- 'settle' for something like this or this
Interested in any thoughts/suggestions on what to do. Basically, help me spend a few G's on the right BMW

All cars listed above are in budget after vrt
Plenty of selection in the uk with your budget thats were id be going this country is dead for decent petrols
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Nice one Gar, food for thought. I may end up in another import for sure. VRT is coming in approx. €3800 for 08 M Sports - bit sickening and deffo blows alot of decent UK petrols off the plan though :( The stronger sterling of late is also bad timing.
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Never got through the list i only checked on the e90's it was ranging from 2 to 3k
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Definitely look across the water, i had a browse earlier on Pistonheads and saw a good few nice examples
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
that 09 one looks very good!!
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Yeah some serious stock alright. The magic numbers are around £7.5-8k + VRT to come in on budget.

Very nice, although I'm presuming it's a Sept 08 UK reg - hence the 09 in the ad. It's running around €16k + travel over & ferry back.

New engines are a nightmare the badge means nothing anymore but you should find everything you need here
http://www.bmwheaven.com/database/engine.php?type=N52#/7
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Diesels are Defo not to be over looked in the above case anyway, more scope for power also over the petrol. Is it the petrol you want, I still miss petrol even though the 46 would monster my last car, I miss the revy nature, the sound, the abuse they can take..but simply cannot over look the power, the economy the tunibility the pace, torque etc gone are the days of 90hp golfs and rattly sdi yokes
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
I really miss my 320d auto , I would go for diesel over petrol ! probably even for 335d not 335i . its more how u will use it ,very short distances and quite low mileage or more than that ,only my opinion

Perfect gar, thanks. More of an education than anything. Will help in the coming weeks.

I was adamant I was going petrol and 110% 6-pot. Now doing the searching, the import sums, and whats available even with upping the budget by 4k, I'm facing the possibility of another diesel! I don't do the mileage to warrant it, and am fearful of unnecessary diesel maintainence costs, but if I'm to replace the E46 in the next fortnight, I can't rule them out anymore.

Hi V, any feedback / experiences with the 325d (3L I6 single turbo from 2007?)
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Diesels have definitely come a long way! No doubt about that :)
BUT if you were set on a petrol, I fear you may end up feeling like you didn't get what you wanted. Don't settle, wait for what you want and it'll be worth it in the end ;)
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Most BMW diesels are very good and this 325d strong as well .but do have chain problems on high mileage cars , not as low as N47 do fail .the one I had with broken chain had over 300k km I think
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
I'm travelling next week, so at least I can't (won't!) do something stupid :D buys me til early February to do something. Or plan B, buy a €1k Corolla until what I want turns up, then flip the reliable 1k shitbox!

RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Theres absolute bargains on new cars in the UK atm. I dare say its the same down with you.
You could get yourself in to something pretty special with alot less money than you think. Big discounts and low finance rates available currently.

I've got 14k of my own hard earned sitting in my back pocket. I've had my fun with brand new cars (everyone needs to experience that once in a lifetime - along with owning an Alfa or 3).
C'mon Doktor - surely you can pull a used diesel (or petrol) out of the bag for me?!

I'd be looking at something like this
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...ries?logcode=p
The LE has a great spec and will drive really well.
I am assuming that all 3 litres will have the same road tax.
Bulletproof engine with very little to go wrong. And tons of mods readily available second hand.

You may have seen this mentioned by Peter and I know it's not M-sport but: http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/3-series/used-2007-bmw-3-series-335i-se-co-cork-fpa-201504230468172

Yea looks really lovely, it's in budget with change for mods or maintenance and I can't think of a reason to go for a 3L 325 over a 335 as it's also a 3L, insurance is CHEAP (seriously, get a quote), tax is the same, and with regards to fuel I really can't imagine there's much in it.
The only difference is 88bhp and 130NM torque :D

RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Lovely car, just not for me lads. I want M Sport and to hell with the reg plate/emissions tax once I stay in budget. I also gotta think about not being stuck with something in another 2 years when I sell up. Unfortunately, that rules me (personally) out of 335i/M3's.
Today, I begin to look at other marques :( sigh sometimes I hate this country.
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
If your after a coupe, would an S-Line A5 TFSi come into budget?
I recently bought an A4 and am really happy with it, its a lovely engine.

Did you put feelers into any dealers? They might keep an eye out with potential trade ins or else give you some contacts in the trade who might help?

Lovely cars, but I'm after NA in a petrol and not forced induction if I can help it this time out. I know very picky eh!

Sounds like a great car in the absence of pics. However, I was strict on 10k, then upped it to 14k - thats deffo an absolute limit dude

RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Back in the land of the living and the search continues.. I've missed out on a low mile 325d M Sport with iDrive & 2 year BMW warranty by a couple of days. Been thrawling the usual sites and loads of members have been good enough to text/whatsapp/PM me with links and heads up. Thanks as always lads for that, and do keep em coming :)
While I'm here, question for the E92 lads. The split folding armrest I'm seeing in some cars and not others...is there additional functionality that this points towards like iPod connectivity/dock of sorts, or is it simply a comfort feature with a sliding armrest on the drivers side of the split?
Edit: Pic

RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
In answer to the above, it's a comfort option only, with no knock on or hints to other factory options.
In other depressing news, I'm now considering any E92 with the exception of the 2L petrol model. Hire car gone back and today I started a commute on foot/public transport. Can't see me doing this for long :D

Split armrest is nice, have it in the 335i. I don't know if it would be something I'd bother retro-fitting if it wasn't there though to be honest.
Hopefully something will pop up sooner rather than later Ciaran!

RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Mother of christ. I decided to stomach the rough exchange rate and look to purchase in the UK once again, to get the exact car I want. Think the currency is bad, you should see the VRT rates for half decent E92s! Late 8's, early 9's for a 2009 335i and closer 11k for a 2010 335i. FFS!!
Now going to view a 320d and a 325d with the later 3L engine although they're not 100% what I want. In fact, the 2L diesel is 2nd last to the 2L petrol in them stakes. Should've stuck with the E36 all them years ago :D
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Its a nightmare the selection is gone to the dogs its the petrols that have become more sought after and command a premium now as its in such small numbers
just looking at f10's this morning on pistonheads 680 models in total for sale only 21 of them are petrol
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Just buy an E46 M3 and be done with it..fecking worse than Peter:happy::hehe!:

How dare you! ...Nobody's worse than me! :D :D :D :hehe!:
At the moment there's 2 e92s on carzone with petrol engines bigger than 2.5, one is the 2008 325 in M&G for 18,750 - and the other is the silver 335i in Galway which really doesn't look great to be honest.
The silver 08 325i for 17k is long gone.
I would've thought there would be at least a few cars popping up through trade ins by now but doesn't look like it :/
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
The 335i in Galway has a head gasket blown on it. I had it checked before I got mine.
( that's if it's the one with 335 in the reg)

Ah yes, I remember reading that on backroads!
Ha, the lady that bought mine must've got in there before him for the 07-D-335 :p
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
Keep in mind the e92 is quiet poorly built compared to other models.
Had dealings with many of them in the last 2 years and many had to get windscreens seals changed, door frame seals changed etc, very annoying wind and trims noise, very common to have the window bouncing left and right when half opened at motorway speeds too.
Had to do a task on a e92 20d last night after the mileage was dropped down big time by a company here. Cluster was not working right so I fixed it. Car got imported from uk last week and is already on irish reg. So beware people, always check english history too.
And the chap was Irish..just saying in case you decide start blaming Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, French etc...
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
What about picking up an e46 325ci or e39 525i sport and run it for a year and chuck the cash into a savings account you wont lose anything on the e39 or e46 and the e92 will continue to fall in price giving you more options next year
-
RE: E92 Search (and engine choices!)
I had suggested that alright ;) Makes alot of sense though, but I s'pose if the focus is on a more modern machine, something older probably won't fit the bill.
