E39 M Sport II suspension
According to the spec sheet the 530 has M Sport II suspension and I'm trying to find out what it comprises as I never heard of it before..
Does anyone know the difference between M Sport II suspension and M Sport suspension? From some searches I did some folks just say it's has thicker anti roll bars compared to M Sport but the part numbers for the shocks are different between the two which suggests theres more to it that that.

Re: E39 M Sport II suspension
The million dollar question 4 years iv looked for the answer on and off and frankly there is not a single person on the planet who can answer "what the shock difference is" i even have a sachs catalogue from 2003 and the the msport 2 and msport 1 shock have an identical part no.
Through searching iv also found msport 1 shocks for £80 sterling directly from sachs
Arb difference is 1mm between the pair on the front cant remember the rears off the top of my head

That's interesting. I checked the Sachs catalogue online today and they list shocks for M Sport suspension including the bmw part number which they correspond to, however there's no mention of the bmw part no for the M Sport II shocks

C3 list them as tech II
http://www.c3bmw.co.uk/StockItem.asp?categoryID=114&subcategoryID=0&productID=1585&oRef=-1§ion=2&Item=unassign
My invoice lists part number: 36.A61A as the part for the front shocks.
We also compared them before they went in, they were absolutely identical to the original units. Shaft diameter was exactly the same.

Re: E39 M Sport II suspension
They sure do as does realoem/bmwfans/ecs etc but whats the actual difference outside of the bmw network apart from the number they both have aluminium housings both identical weights

Tech 2 is slightly lower isn't it? Could it be the shaft length?

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
Dont think so 528i sport and 525 look identical maybe a slight variation in the coil spring probably 5mm tops
Id love to have both shocks(new) in my hand to get to the bottom of it once and for all

With tech II the springs are different between petrol and diesel 6 cylinders but the shocks are all the same so I don't think its the springs.

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
There is a section in the BMW ETK parts catalogue called the spring table. In order to determine the correct spring part number for your car (any BMW model, even e34/e36, may be earlier) you need to enter all the options fitted to your car & it will spit out a spring part number.
Have a look at c3bmw.co.uk for pricing in e39 shocks. I think they were best value for OE Sachs shocks.
Example of spring table:

Yes but pre facelift cars could have used different coils shocks wouldn't normally lower a car unless it was a big difference its generally the spring
What i mean is visually there is little to no difference in ride height between msport 1and 2
Its not shock shaft lenght it would have been discovered a long time ago iv read countless threads on this some 20-30 pages long never a solution at the end of it iv asked bmw they have no idea and sachs say they are the same shock
The guy who made the shock was murdered in 2004 so thats a dead end

[emoji1] you've spent a lot of time researching this!
The reason I suggested shaft length was that if the cars were of different ride height the rebound would need to be different on the shock. It's obviously not the case.

No, what it means is there are multiple different springs with different spring rates for any model depending on the options fitted. ie if there's a load of options fitted the springs required will be slightly different to a bSe model sport.
I looked in to the Sport II thing and got nowhere a while back.

Thanks, I've sent an email off to a parts adviser I'm friendly with so hopefully he comes up with something new

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
Bottom lime is whatever you put in now (assuming its a reputable brand) it will be far superior to the 12 year old item it is replacing.
Worth reading this:

Agreed, 100%.
After having put different springs and shocks on many cars over the years and never being happy despite the assurances and recommendations on the internet I'm now a firm believer in oem suspension.

Just on this, bavauto confirmed they'll ship to Ireland but at $200 per pair. The shocks are only $460 for all for from them so. $400 more for shipping seems dear

I would just go with a Bilstien B12 kit if it was me. No point in sticking with OEM when theres better parts available for less €€€.
Do BMW not sell these under the Valueline dicosunted parts for older cars??

I must look into the B12 kit, thanks. Have you tried it yourself? Id be interested in any real world opinions. I'm not sure if they do offer then under the Valueline but I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

I have a B12 kit on my M3 but it has moved about 500m since I fitted them. So I mightnt be able to give the most informed opinion. But my driveway is pretty bumpy and it feels fine on that if that helps. :hehe!:
Know of a good few OEM fanatics that have fitted them to E36 M3's when thier fanaticism wained when they were given the quote for new shocks from the main dealer - never heard a complaint from them after fitting the B12 kit.

Thanks.
About half of my commute is on an old concrete road that'll expose the flaws in any suspension set up. The same road made the back of the e92 bounce up and down when it was on h&r race spring so I'm wary of going for something to harsh

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
B12 is more "Sport" suspension  , not so soft as OEM Msport suspension . its not too hard as for E39 family saloon car but its slightly different ,more stiff

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
I still hold on this option that its better to try once as to read 100 times
but I would like to get as close as possible to OEM on daily E39 ,maybe Boge or Sacks if they do for these cars ,they should do actually .otto parts do Boge I think ,but its not cheap

Agree, I think oem would be best. I can get all 4 boge shocks in the US for €400 but they are the oem equivalent for m sport suspension rather than m sport ii suspension, which I have.

RE: E39 M Sport II suspension
To add even more weirdness to it bmw north america never offered 705a (mtechII) shocks as an option only mtech I
Msport1 will cost you €415 from the uk for all four
Sachs 170-857 rears
Sachs 556-834 front
