Anywhere do classic car insurance for cars over 15 years old or do they all only offer for cars over 20 years now?
First Ireland give them a try but be better to call to their office in leixlip and talk directly to them rather than ringing their head office in town because they're more likely to help you out face to face! I have classic insurance on my e36 with them and the car wasn't 20years old when I took out policy. It was over 15 years though but I have heard of lads getting cars that are 15years insured on classic policy with them!
Think my e36 was 16-17 years when I took out classic policy! Just to point out it was an odd age!!

As Paddy said, First Ireland will give you insurance on 15yr old car once you already hold a policy, they do a 2000mile policy but it can be extended up to a max of 10000 if needs be.
You can also add cars onto the same policy (15yrs old+) and they give 70% OFF  I added the touring on it was 35euro the 528 was about 45euro for the year on top of the iS.
For 15yrs old they only do certain makes, BMW Merc and Jag, it goes to 20yr for certain car makers too.
I rang about a 8v MKII GTi last year to add onto the e36 and they said no, its too much of a performance car, but yet they will insure e36 m3's etc :hehe!::hehe!:
That's the information I have got from them over the past couple of years but could have changed since now.
Your right about the 15 year for BMW etc but they wouldn't quote me for a classic policy on the basis that its an m3.
TBH I don't think I would be going down the 2nd policy route unless it was super cheap.
Taxing a 2.8 and a 3.2 just isn't really an option.
Stupid wedding costs! ha
What kinda discount would a classic policy give you over standard?
Im paying about 250 on the iS was just over 300 for 2 cars being the 528 and iS, 2000 miles on each car :wink:Quote:

I have my e36 on classic 4000 miles a year for 224 fully comp with 500 windscreen cover, breakdown assist and full claims protection. Plus the girlfriend is named driver. I had to provide proof of an existing policy on the daily driver which was a 'live' no-claims history report.
As I said though, you're better off dropping into their office in Leixlip as they are helpful there rather than calling their HQ in town. I got my renewal in June and the cost was 255, when I called to query this, the call-centre staff wouldn't entertain me saying there were admin charges and all sorts of shite that I needed to pay, so I stopped into the Leixlip office and without even fully arguing the point, they knocked 30 off the cost. So I can't recommend it enough for the sake of ten minutes in with them. Also, you may be asked to provide a membership number of a car-club you're in, your forum reg number off driver will do, that's what I gave anyway.
Just bumping an old thread rather than starting a new one. I rang around a few insurance companies today including First Ireland and none of them would quote me on my 2002 E46 M3. Has anyone recently got a classic policy on a 15 year old BMW? I have another car as a daily and it's insured in my name so no problem proving it's a second car.
Hi Nige,
I have 2 inputs
1) my understanding was that First Ireland would quote you on BMW if >15 years. Did you make sure it was for a classic policy / talk to someone knowledgeable ? I would check it again.

2) Autoline/Newry will quote some marques (eg Porsche, not sure about BMW) down to >10 years old. I am looking into this option now myself so that is concrete.
Good luck with the quest... MM.
Autoline are generally 20 years for BMW but will look at each car e.g. my E36 was 19 years. They did quote me for an '01 E46 M3 too.
Autoline sorted me on my 2002 m3 this year...

Policy now is you must have a 20 year old plus car before they will insure a 15 year old. As John said NCT is a must. Plus you must have a regular policy in your own name. They won't accept company cars any more as I found out earlier in the year, hence I moved to Autoline.
Ah remember the days when you could insure all sorts of crazy foreign reg plates with no questions, no nct. Not that I would have any direct experience with this of course [emoji1]
Oh and they will insure a Porsche from 11 years old.
So I rang Autoline yesterday and got a quote of €730 for classic cover on my 2002 M3. That's with a maximum 5000 miles a year. A bit higher than I expected but it's still cheaper than a standard policy and I do roughly that mileage anyway. They said it's more expensive as the car isn't that old.
Insurance is mind boggling in the country. Autoline covered me on an integrale last year but wouldn't cover me on a gsr lancer because I had penalty points. My points have now expired so I think I'll get on the hunt for some Japanese fun for the winter

I just looked up Autoline and they seems to be a UK company. Do you they insure vehicles in Ireland? Wanna try to get classic cover. Also do you need a primary car?
Well they quoted me and I live in Kerry. They're a broker so my quote is for insurance with Allianz. Any yes, I needed to have a daily car to get a quote.
Auto line quoted me also for the M3 545 fully comp excess of 150 and 3,000 miles. Unfortunately Chubb won't add it to my vintage policy as a classic until it's 20 years old.

M3 is my only car and daily driver so I dont think ill be able to get a classic cover.
I'd imagine if you take the cover under the terms offered, and in a few months time, you ring and say your circumstances have changed and you need up the annual amount, then it will be a more favorable overall fee??

Has anyone done this recently? Rang first ireland but was shot down. They said they use aig for classic car insurance and they only accept 20+ year cars as new buisness... I am off by 1 year...
The rule with First Ireland afaik and it is how I managed things, if you have a car 20 year old or older insured with them then they will quote or add a car 15 years or older. They wont insure a car on its own younger than 20 years.
I think they're all tightening the policies up now - 20 years for new business, case by case basis if you're adding a new classic to an existing policy. Not a huge surprise given the amount of people putting cars on classic policies and then using them as daily drivers.
Yes this seems like the case. Go try to ring few random brokers, lets see if anything comes out of it. Otherwise..I ll have to pest them to move policy over to M3 everytime I am doing a track day just to drive to the place!!!
Time to get on to Pearse Doherty and get him to sort these cartels out once and for all!
I don't know of any insurance companies who will allow you to do a temporary transfer onto a car you own yourself. And a back-forth permanent transfer will get expensive. You might be better off going through Chubb or something and get fleet insurance.
The shinners do have the ability to surprise me, but I'm not sure that someone struggling to insure his fleet of BMW's is the sort of cause they'll take up. Not unless theres a lot of votes in it of course. :D
