E36 coupe Heater issue
Have a e36 318tds coupe
My problem is the blower is working but there is no heat coming just cold air.
Im just wondering is there any common problems that cause this?
Car comes up to temperature as it should so its not a thermostat problem.
Any ideas?

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Jack the car up, run her to temp, rad cap off, heaters on full, get a long pipe that will fit into the expansion bottle, fill it with water to allow you force any air out while turning the bleed screw on the top of the rad. Failing that I have a full matrix, panel and heater control valve available for sale for a coupe.

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
What will that process do the car is not air locked running and driving perfect. Thanks for the reply btw
I was more leaning towards there is something giving trouble with the hot/cold dial some valve not doing what it should?
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
I had a similar situation, car ran fine but no hot air. Was convinved there was no air in the system, bled it again and bingo. You could also take the valve off and check for blockages etc. I don't think the its the final resistor because from reading a post recently you would have no air blowing at all.

It blows but wont blow hot air for some reason. I will bleed it again and see might replace the rad also as its only in average shape.
Im convinced there is some valve somewhere sticking but sure ill give that a go first

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Definite sign of trapped air, needs to be bled again properly

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
I had the same peoblem with my e36, I bled it and changed the thermostat still no joy. It was the heater valve, €20 in the scraper and dosent take long to change.

Id be suspicious that could be my problem where abouts is it? Coming from from the bulkhead somewhere?
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Yeah on the bulkhead passenger side beside the battery tray

Are them valves moved by cables or are they electronically controlled?

Is there any way of testing it if i bring power to it like testing a window reg for example?

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Better off using a multimeter. After a quick google: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249234

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Replaced the heater valve with one i know was working and still no luck and the system is bleed properly still stumped even cleaned out the heater rad.

Re: E36 coupe Heater issue
You sure your stat is operating correctly? If it's stuck open it can cause a few issues and seems as how you changed heater value and bled the system then maybe it's worth checking?!

Heater core?
Theres no leaks and the system was flushed so id say its ok. Im at the stage where im just going to talk out every heater pipe and pipe it direct into the heather rad id have no control over it but least id be warm lol
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
I had the same problems and a new heater matrix was the solution, pig of a job to change but worth it to go from freezing air to roasting hot, it has to be the issue, I even removed my old one and flushed it and it looked fine but still blew cold air till I replaced it with a new one, cost about 30 in the motor factors
-
Re: E36 coupe Heater issue
If it is the case it's the core/matrix on the e36 it's handy enough. Take out the glove box. Undo the heater valve. Undo the nut holding the pipe on the engine side of the bulkhead under the windscreen. 3 torx head screws holding the pipe work together. Use something to catch the water and when you remove the pipes the core will slide outward to you. There is no need to remove the full dash or housing for the matrix
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Im convinced its not the matrix im going to pipe it direct from the engine rough i know but if i get heat then its some valve stuck or the dial in the car damaged. Id rather a clutch gone any day over this shit lol

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Has this car got a cabin filter??

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
Weird today was driving the car and there seems to be some heat when you set it to blow on the windscreen other settings are stone cold tho has me puzzled.
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
The driver setting is always cold to prevent you from falling asleep but you should have hot air to the windscreen and feet.
You'll notice a blue colour near the driver setting. I thought there was something wrong with my car too at first but it's how they are :)

That is not correct.
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
100% true, check the dial, as you twist it towards the driver setting the colour surrounding the dial goes blue :)
let me find a picture...

RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
People always assume the worst when you post about a problem. I hope you didn't go through all the hassle for nothing.
As I said mine is the same its hot when pointed at the windscreen or feet but not the face. @[Super4] 's e36 is the same too, I thought mine was broken too but he explained it to me.
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
The analog system should still be warm just not as hot as the air that would hit the windscreen etc
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
It's stone cold on driver setting on mine anyway but if you kind of set it between the face and feet/windscreen setting you can get a little bit of warm air through. I'm guessing it's different with the climate unit?
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
I'm probably wrong it's been years since I've had an e36 with analog heating
-
RE: E36 coupe Heater issue
I really don't like the analog, it's the one thing that bothers me everytime I sit in my car, but if it's climate or sunroof I'd take sunroof everytime but that just comes down to personal preference. I think it's silly a lot of e36s were specced with one or the other, one doesn't exactly cancel the need for the other. Can't be too fussy though, when you find a car that ticks all the other boxes sometimes you gotta compromise!

I'm happy with my knobs :) the digital is clumsy and confusing. It might look better depending on your opinion but it's a 90s car and the knobs are not out of place.
