such tragedy it didnt happen this year. Always great day out.
As I was driving in to work this morning I spotted a car a little bit ahead on the motorway and did the usual "I spy" game thing of trying to figure out what it was from a distance based on slightly vague visuals, in this case the rear end. SUV style. Could have been an X7, but even from the distance the impression was that it wasn't quite that big, so latest X5 I thought. As I got closer I was somewhat horrified to see that it was actually a new model Hyundai Sante Fe.
Nothing wrong with the Sante Fe at all, decent motor, even if not my personal cup of tea, but horrified that BMW's recent styling direction allows even someone that prides himself on being a petrolhead and keeping fairly up to date on new cars and cars generally (the hip height pile of Autocars, Evo's, BMWCar's and various classic mags in our down stairs loo is presented as evidence :)) could make that mistake.
BMW designers need to be sent to the naughty step so that they can have a long hard think about what they've done.
On the other hand, its quite a compliment to Hyundai that their latest is, even briefly, perceived as possibly a BMW.....
BMW are using Korean designers now - they’ve been vocal about appealing to Asia, while Hyundai and Kia are using German designers, no doubt to appeal more to Europeans. It’s screwed up.
I was going to say - I wonder how much of this is BMW designers getting worse or Hyundai (and others) designers getting better. Probably a combination of both (although I have to say the G8X and other newer BMW designs are growing on me). I didn’t know that fact above about where their designers are from, but it makes sense and aligns with my existing thinking - interesting!
On the N7, heading south at about 2.30am, on a trailer, a very shiny e36 M3 in Dakar Yellow with very shiny Style 24 alloys. Even in the relative dark (street light section) it looked like a mint car. On 🇬🇧 plates, Irish plates on the van towing it.
