That's the thing Mick, I can't imagine any insurance company will cover someone if they are in an accident and their car is found to be improperly taxed. I am sure they will not pay out as the car should not have been on the road in the first place, meaning not only are people commiting tax fraud but also driving around uninsured but that's a whole other issue (insurance that is).

Taxing a car has nothing to do with roadworthiness.
That's like saying if your tax is out you're not insured

Its not called road tax anymore people. They have changed it to motor tax. they should do a big survey on the irish driver... Engine size. Miles... fuel.... scrap motor tax and add it onto fuel. 0r lower the price similar to uk but I dint think that will happen. They love to use systems from the UK that rapes the everyday person.
RE: Garda crack down on bmws 2.0l on book
It was always going to happen at some stage, but the motor tax system in this country is a absolute disgrace and makes zero sense. The roads are a utter disgrace!!! My own road home from the nearest town is a joke. I don't see the point in paying to be honest. Two thirds of the motor tax last year went into Irish water. I know it is a very serious offence but the opportunity was there for a long time. And the government itself let this all happen. I don't blame anyone for going for the cheaper tax. The system in this country is stupid old and backwards.

Fines will have to be paid or they get crushed.
Motor tax funds many other things in addition to roads. All taxes are arbitrary & there is no real cause & effect between source of payment & what is spent on.
There are things that need to be done that cost X amount, the reality of it is that the funds are pooled to fund the most pertinent things based on budget allocations, which is based on politicians, which is based on "he who shouts loudest" approach.
Property tax or water charges are just another way to drag money in to pay the bills. You could argue that those that we put in charge don't manage it well but that is a topic for a different thread!
Governments around the world devise crude methods like the USC (universal social charge) or a complex mess like water metering or something in between like motor tax & VAT. At the end of the day a certain amount of money needs to be dragged in. If it doesn't get collected in one way then it will come through another, like it or not. If you stand back and think about it some methods of calculation are bananas and nonsensical!
The upside of motor tax is that you can choose how much you are willing to pay by choosing one type of car over another, with something crude like USC you have no say.
Despite that I would still like it if 630i and M6 were cheaper to tax!:tounge:

What really baffles me is the exponential increase in tax rates depending on engine cc, a 2.0L in theory should cost double that of a 1.0L but it costs almost three times as much. 😑
RE: Garda crack down on bmws 2.0l on book
And a 3.0L is 7.5 times the tax of a 1.0L !!! :D

What baffles me is that it's based on cc in the first place... I just don't get it.
If it's a pollution tax base it on cc,
Road tax base it on weight,
Wealth tax base it on value.
What bearing does (or did) the cc have on how much tax should be payable?
RE: Garda crack down on bmws 2.0l on book
Its fuckin ridiculous(excuse my french). I reckon it came about from the old thing that if you had a big car its a "guzzler" which is ridiculous this day and age especially when alot of 3.0d like 530d are more efficient then your average 1.3.and its really pissing me off that they want to penalise people that cant afford the extortionate tax on big cheap cars(hence having older then 08 car) but yet the rich in 50k bmw and audi only pay 200-300 a year.its completely bonkers and makes no sense whatsoever no matter what way you put it. I personally like big cars and this means i cant afford to have one even though it may be extremely cheap to buy.like whos gonna justify paying over 2k in tax for a car worth 3k for example. Something needs to change but as usual the government have us by the balls.would make you want to pack up and get the next plane outta here
