Bodywork wise I think the new cars will out last thier predecessors hands downs. I havent seen an E90 or E60 with rust on them yet. Whereas E46's and E39's of the same age would have arches hanging outta them and rusty boot lids and petrol flaps by now.
Looking at my M135i, they have definately addressed the issue of rotting wheel arches and completely redesigned the way the water drains away. At the front the plastic arch liner stops about an inch before the lip of the wing so the dirt doesnt get trapped between the liner and the wing any more. Makes it alot easier to clean too.
At the rear, there is no longer a return fold joining the outer wing to the inner arch. They both blend together into a point and then are fully seam sealed and stone chipped.
Lets hope that they no longer drian sun roofs into the sill and we'll be sorted.
