Guys I'm a tyre fitter by trade and if you knew how hard it is to work with powder coated or freshly painted wheels the slightest rub and the paint could chip off.The first day oem paint finish is a lot easier to work with. Now marking the spokes or the wheel with the tyre machine is not on and that is the guy that fitting them fault. But while you can take your time and take a lot of care taking the tyre off with the tyre leaver it's still so easy to mark them because it is a metal leaver and with most bmw a very stiff sidewall tyre and a soft painted wheel.I would say most tyre fitters hate to see freshly painted or powercoated wheels coming through the door for fear of marking them.
I can see where you are coming from Mike, but the majority of tyre fitters dont give a flying fook about most people's wheels as 95% of the public dont give a toss about what their wheels look like.
Its frustrating when you can see that they arent even trying to do their best to give the wheel back in the same condition it when in. Never once heard a tyre fitter explain before hand that they might end up causing a small bit of damage due to the wheel being refurb'd, and its fairly easy to spot one that has been too.
The company that refurbs the wheels, manages to get the tyres back on without damaging them, so its not impossible to do the same or at least do very little.
Removal is a bit more difficult, but is it not possible if damage is to be done to do it to the inner wall of the wheel rather than the faces?
and lot of garages dont have special tools to fit tires without damage to the wheels .
Putting the tyre on is not the problem with the freshly painted wheels as the tyre leaver can't mark it.Its the taking it of that causes the problem because of the low profile stiff side wall and some of the BMW alloys have a big stepped dish at the front of the wheel so the tyre is hard to get it over it.But I do agree that most guys working in some of them places couldent care less. Its a problem in all places some people have no pride in the work and just go in for the wages at the end of the week .Ive had to fit tyres for what was a main dealer a few years ago to a vw jeep after they had tried and failed to fit 4 tyres to it and had ruined the 4 alloys wheels with the tyre machine every one of the spokes had been hit with the head of the tyre machine and they couldent have cared less.If I know the wheels are only after been painted I will warn the costumer about possible damage. It dosent always happen and you could have loads in with out any problems but there is always one.
Last place I had tyres fitted warned me that they couldn't guarantee not marking the wheels.
I didn't mind too much as it was the same two that were marked a few years ago by another
crowd.
They took their time though and didn't mark them any more than the marks that were there
already. The place before that put fairly nive gouges in the face of the spokes and good three
inch scrapes on the rim...but that's the chance you take I s'pose.
Just to add something else into it which will really give tyre fitters a bad name.Id a customer in a bit ago with a rear wheel from a 1000cc motor bike.He had a new tyre fitted to it a few weeks before he brought the wheel into me and the wheel kept loosing air pressure. So I checked the tyre and found out the guy that fitted the tyre cut about 3" of the tyre bead with the tyre machine and had brought the bead down to the steel bead. And instead of owning up and cover the price of a new tyre he decided to fill in the gap with house hold silicone and let the guy off out the door without saying anything. To say the customer wasn't best pleased would be a understatement. He could have been killed over some idiot trying to cover his own mistake.
well guys all i can say is ,i thought that stealing valve caps was dead and buried ,well its not in Drogheda ..took my young land in to hospital .
Came out 5 hours later which is good for Drogheda lol.
to find all my nice new matching sleeves and M// caps gone ...

Foooooooook!!!!!! Pick up a solid bolt with the washer still intact in my left rear tyre driving through an estate. Crawling home at 10mph. Pitstop at Marlay Park. I wouldn't mind now if the Gardai would come along http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/15/asu3u7en.jpg

James at Campbells Garage at Reilly’s Bridge Cabra/ Finglas looked after my BBS alloys on the E39. A gent to deal with and knew the effort that had gone into them. Still warned me about damage but used plenty of lube on the tyres and had special plastic covers that inserted onto the grippers on the tyre fitting machine. No damage to wheels and a great effort to get me sorted.
All you lads talking about getting tyres fitted and then I pick up a puncture, typical! Any recommendations for Southside, near Sandyford? Anyone want to start a collection for me, just dropped a G on it and now need a new rear tyre [emoji22]

I've done repairs on the past that have lasted the remaining life of the tyre with no problems. Lovely car by the way I was admiring it at Kinnity.
Thanks Kevin, I am hoping it can be repaired, I still have full tyre pressure so I am optimistic. Even if it means I have to drive like I'm driving Miss Daisy until payday...Quote:

Old eBay special one had really deteriorated after just 1 year due to the fact that it had no clear coat on it.

Would love a set of those for the compact
Is there a kit available for the compact? Worked out a lot cheaper than bmw springsQuote:

Nice fresh new ones gone on hopefully they do the job!!
Easy enough job little bit of persuasion required to get the rears off not really any other issues apart from that.
