I completely agree with this.
The whole point of the E28 M5 was that it looked like a bog standard 518i but could humiliate and blow an unsuspecting 911 off the autobahn. The German market cars were far less conspicuous than even the GB spec RHD E28 M5's with no boot spoiler, no wheel arch extensions, TRX alloys and many were debadged.
The E34 and E39 M5 kept the low profile look but it started to go a little awry with the E60 and the ones that followed.
If BMW have decided to go back to the M5's understated roots, then I'm all for that.
