That was at the Straffan show. Didn't look like the real deal to me but only had a very quick look.

A McLaren drove by quickly and I was annoyed that I couldn't identify it, was about to have a go at McLaren for making the entire range almost completely identical, but I can't really can I? Look at Porsche, Aston Martin, Audi, Mercedes, and even BMW sometimes with the 2 series looking like a 5 series that was put in the dryer and the 7 looking like a swollen 5...
Got me thinking, what do the people want? Would you prefer the entire range to have the same look so that the choice only comes down to size, or would you prefer each model to be unique so you have a variety of designs to choose from?
Much prefer the variety of designs - hate when you get a quick glance at a modern BMW and you have to take a double take because you arent sure if its a 3/5 series or a 5/7 series.
Ive no problem with them sharing some features, say the E39 and E38, same door handles, wing mirrors (in some cases), speedo clocks, etc, but if one passed in the corner of your eye, you'd know what it was!
Definitely agree, way better to make each model more distinctive. Like the e38 - e39 - e46 generation, nobody would mistake one for the other really.
Other cars spotted walking around Auckland include: BMW F80 M3 (still disappointed with how they sound in person, at least with the standard exhaust :(), BMW M2 (sounded amazing in comparison), Alfa Romeo 4C, several Maserati GT MC Stradales (seem to be pretty popular here and an absolutely stunning car, one of my favourites for sure), and several Mercedes C63 AMGs.
I'm more than happy for a distinctive look between the models and generations, but having the opportunity to swap between models and generations on the current and recent fleet members I'm a bit more bothered about a couple of things like some consistency in ergonomics and user experience.
In swapping between the cars, there are several different locations for cruise control functions. The number of times I sit in to an e36 or e46 and reach for the door panel to operate the leccy windows because that's where the buttons are on the 5's, etc. is a bit of a pain. These might be 1st world problems but they are an irritation. I don't necessarily want the interiors to all be the same but it should be possible to achieve some consistency in the design philosophy and guidelines. These aren't pieces of equipment that have advanced significantly between generations in a way that might fundamentally change the design or necessitate significant architectural or electrical changes to the interface.
The one brand that I find the current generation of exterior styling very confusing on is Mercedes. Without going all Fr Dougal (Big, far away!) the ability to differentiate between the latest C, E and S class when more than a reasonable few feet away is tough. That might be OK for the C class owner whose pals think he's struck it rich and moved up to an S, but not so much for the S class owner whose friends and business associates think he's been NAMA'd to the extent of needing to move down the range.
I know what you mean, it was consistent e32->e34->e36 generation, but then in the e38 and e39 they moved window switches to the doors but not the e46, bit weird. They never brought them back to the centre again in models that followed though as far as I can think did they?
Have to say despite the similarities in manufacturers' model range, there's always one that stands out to me. Like in the Mercedes range the S-Class is just stunning from every angle especially in person but the rest of the range look like ugly siblings... Yes they have similar features but the proportions just aren't right :D In the Audi range I find myself drawn to the A3 saloon, lovely little car. In the BMW range you can see the 2, 5, and (the outgoing) 7 seem more closely related than the 3/4, which I prefer design wise, they just look sharper.
