I dunno, they've been saying that for 10 years.

And in that time the M3 and M5 have both lost a couple of cylinders, as have a few of the RS Audi's. BMW's, generally, with more than 4 cylinders have gone from being a bit of a niche to less common than rocking horse poo.
That's why I'm stocking up on straight 6's :)
It doesn't help that newish V8s (2008+) are in the RIDICULOUS 2350 Euro CO2 tax bracket... and I'm sorry, it doesn't matter how much money one has, that's an obscene amount to spend on a year's road tax.
I was at the runway club event yesterday and couldn't agree with you more re the V8. Ive been a long term fan of my e46 m3 and repeatedly sung it's praises to anyone who'd listen. But standing beside the e92 m3 v8 when it started and hearing that grumble just elevated the car right into the mix with the rest of the exotica. It just seemed so much more special than the largely silent warm startup on the e46.
I always thought the v8 can't be worth the €20k extra to buy one, but now I think they are and I want one....
Fantastic thing, launched very well repeatedly with no drama whatsoever. It was badly organised in the sense that spectators didn't know what the terminal speed was on each run, but the alpina seemed to be holding its own against normal cars.
One of the most fascinating cars to watch was BMW Irelands v12 760, it was phenomenally quick.
