So, it's nearly time to pull this back out, dropped it off to AMI in Gorey to get the tyre changed, 7k km on a rear tyre :D
AMI will then take it to Ducati for some warranty work.
Fuel gauge has failed and the cruise control doesn't disengage by rolling the throttle against the stop like it used to.
Gonna get it serviced while it's in too.
No, they're down in the industrial estate by Tesco, about 1km down the road. Same place trades as Overlanders.
So I've had this back on the road for the last few weeks.
There's 9k km on it now.
It has some warranty work done but nothing major, fuel level sensor, cruise control disengage switch, front fender and the side stand.
Just a few more pics

Nearly 18k km on it now. Not bad considering it's a weekend toy [emoji23]
I've had it for a bit more than a year.
I've been on and off about selling it a few times but can't bring myself to actually part with the thing.
In the year that I've owned it, it's been immensely reliable.
Running cost haven't been too bad.
€600 on servicing
€100 on oil between services
€1000 on tyres
I was a bit pissed off when I discovered this.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...eaa582fb35.jpg
It's the back of the exhaust. There was a rivet holding a build plate in it, the exhaust spat the rivet out, looks like it swung and caught the tyre. The dealer that I bought it off are refusing to do anything about it as it is 2 weeks out of its warranty. Very annoying for what is now a €3k exhaust. I'm sure I'll get it sorted.
Trying to twist Ducati's arm into letting me buy an extended warranty for if, by bike is technically not eligible but it would be great to get the 5 year warranty that's offered on new bikes, it's a €1000, a no brainer.

I haven't updated this in a very long time.
It's been in the main dealers for the last 6 weeks trying to solve a misfire.
There's 25k km on it now, I covered 3200km on it in Greece back in April with 18 other bikes.
It was an amazing trip. We had the bikes shipped down in advance.
I flew into Athens where I go a taxi to the hotel to find my bike waiting.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8427e56d69.jpg
I had it serviced before I left, new plugs, filters, a full service and some fresh rubber. It didn't need it but I wanted to do as a precautionary measure.
When I went to start it, it was dead.
After trying lots of options I contacts the local dealer who had a new battery in stock, so off I went.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c6875f0f51.jpg
I got it back up and running but found that it bogged under throttle when trying to use low down torque, so I had to ride it like a much smaller displacement machine, annoying but didn't want to ruin my holiday.
I posted some of these before but here's all the photos.
Trip of a lifetime, can't wait to do the next one.

Some stunning photography there......
I seriously need to do a trip like that !!!! Awesome pictures.
The time is coming to put the bike back on the road.
When I got the bike back to Ireland I took it up to Milsport in the north to get it looked at, the changed the plugs, HT leads, fuel pump and a whole lot of other things and they couldn't resolve the bogging under throttle issue.
After three months I got a phone call telling me that they found the problem and that it was the HT lead, it had been changed twice but somehow it fell through the cracks.
They did let me use this for 6 weeks, Monster 1200 S, which was a lot of fun, 170 kg, 150hp and a quick shifter, so pin the throttle and just go up through the gears, the bike had a full race Termignoni system so popped and banged like crazy, it would also rev match on the down shift so just sounded ridiculous, absolutely loved this bike but it's not a tourer, 200km on it and you'd be sore.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...be04e2e2d7.jpg
I got the Multistrada picked up and delivered to a friend of mine in Wexford with a heated garage which is where it has sat since October. Hopefully it starts up without issue, it's been on a battery tender the last few months so there shouldn't be an issue.
I'll take the M5 off the road and use this as my daily from the start of April.
I'm doing my next trip in June covering Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and finally into Montenegro. Given how much fun I had in Greece, I cannot wait for this one, it should be epic, I'm going to be filming it too, so that should be interesting.
The bike has 26k km on it now, it'll probably be on about 30k by the time I head for Croatia, so I will likely carry out the major service (timing belt etc) and trade it in for a new one at the end of the season. Selling bikes in Ireland is a bit odd, when you approach the 40k km mark, they're very hard to shift.
Got back from the Balkans tour on Saturday evening.
I did this trip wondering if I was going to hang onto a bike, I've had such a shit time getting the bike maintained to the right standard.
Even before I left, it was running well but not 100% there was surging at WOT. I figured I'd do the tour and make a call on it when I got back.
22 bikes were trucked down to Split from Gorey, 4 pillions, so 26 people in total.
These tours are cool in that, if you want to take part in the scheduled tour you can, or you can make your own way and meet at a specified hotel at the end of the end, myself and three others chose the latter.
I met these guys in Greece, serious pilots, fast but safe and well judged in terms of conditions.
We arrived late on Saturday, hit the hotel at about 11pm.
Sunday morning was prepping the bikes, I had brought the full luggage, panniers and top box, I had my laptop with me as I needed to do some video editing so had to keep the top box, but found that I could pack light enough to ditch the panniers, so I left them in the truck.
We took a ride down the Celina river for lunch and explored the Palace of Diocletian in the evening following dinner.

First official day was Monday, so off we went from Split to Plitvice.
With regards to the bike, I was worried I would have trouble similar to Greece, checked the bike on Saturday evening as soon as I arrived and it started without any errors or nonsense. I had brought some tools just in case but I had no issue with the bike.
I had put Michelin Pilot Road 5's on the bike 2 months beforehand, the bike had been serviced 5k km beforehand so it didn't need anything. Last year I serviced it and had a load of work done but this time, I knew it was working fine so I decided I wouldn't poke the bear.
Anyway, off we went to Split, first impressions of Croatia, great biking country, road surfaces are fine with plenty of grip and none stops curvy roads, the Ducati devoured the bends, for the first time in months, I was properly dialled into the bike and just enjoying the experience.
We went cross country really technical sections of road. The Ducati devoured it, everyone else in our group was on a R1200GS BMW and with their 19" front wheel don't change direction like the Multistrada with its 17" wheel. I had so much more pace than the BMW's, my silly motorcycle choice was starting to be vindicated [emoji23][emoji23]
We hit Plitvice. Checked in, a few beers, dinner and bed.
Tuesday we explored the lakes.

Wednesday, it was time to cross the border into Bosnia, we were heading east, our destination, Banja Luka.
We were invited to a barbecue at a local bike club, MK ISTOK, this was arranged by a local who had met the guide on his travels ten years previously. What a savage night, pints were €2.50, needless to say I was not in a good state in the morning.

The following morning was tough. I climbed on the Ducati and quietly reminded myself not to crash the bike.
Today we were heading from Banja Luka to Mostar.
Bosnia is quite something, you're reminded of the tragic history of the country, we encountered a lot of shelled houses, areas riddled with bullet holes. At one stage we were going cross country, and in the middle of nowhere, we encountered this military base, Bosnian, serious amount of hardware, gives you a really uneasy feeling. I wasn't hanging around to introduce myself.
It started to rain, bad news when you're on the beaten track, as we were heading to Mostar.
The road surface was polished and slippery, I took it quite easy, had to crawl as I could feel the bike squirming for grip in corners.
I really enjoy riding in the rain on the right surface, you have to be smooth, fortunately the surface changed to lovely black grippy tarmac.
It's now raining heavily, Peter, part of our small group is leading, we take a short cut down this dust road, this is not Ducati road, my handlebars are too low to stand up straight and my suspension is too hard for any real off roading. I have no crash bars, we cover 20km down this dust road, in the pissing rain, sliding all over the place, I couldn't tell a puddle from a pot hole, now cursing my 17" wheel, I plough on behind the 4 BMW's who are flying down the road.
We hit tarmac after what felt like an eternity, we make our lunch stop, and we're there first, I thought we had lost a ton of time, turns out our shortcut had knocked 50km off our journey. We couldn't help but laugh.
We stop for lunch. Afterwards we do the final run for Mostar.
All 22 bikes were now in convoy, I was towards the front as I had made pace before the rain. I could see the tour guide working his way through the pack, Derek is his name, marvellous rider.
I see him overtake the two guys behind me, motion for him to pass me, he waves and shows me a thumbs up, I got the message. Happy with the traction, I pushed on.
Myself and Derek separated from the pack and I had one of the best days of biking I've ever had, you had to be so careful for slip, white lines were a sure fire way of coming down, you couldn't cross them on power, you had to enter the overtaking lane, put the power down in a straight line. It was completely exhilarating.
Derek was on an Africa Twin Adventure Sport, I had a 50hp advantage and he was my number plate, serious rider. We reach the end of the twisties, he pulls up beside me puts his hand out for a high five, I had to laugh.
He pulls over for the rest of the group, soaked, I push on for Mostar.
Hit the hotel, shower, beer, dinner. I decide to wonder around Mostar for the evening. Friday we take in a 100km loop around Mostar, grab some lunch by this fab spring.

Saturday, time to hit Montenegro. Nothing prepares you for how beautiful the country is. Every time you crest a hill or take a corner you're met by stunning scenery.
We crawl through the countryside just taking everything in. There was no pace, you simply had to savour the majesty of the place.
We hit the ski resort in Žabljak. Now summertime, it's a hiking and climbing resort.

Sunday, our destination is Kotor, not before we take a zip line across the Tara River Canyon, 1.3km deep, the zip line is nearly 900m long, great fun.
We hit the road, this was one of the best days biking I've had, ended up on fresh amazing tarmac that would suddenly end and turn into a gravel track, unbelievable fun.
Kotor is a gem of a place, we stop for a cup of coffee 25km outside of Kotor, I check the sat nav, hotel is 6km as the crow flies but 25km of road, switchbacks down a mountain side, once again, the Ducati is in its elements, it just carves it's way down the canyon, the pops and bangs of the 1200cc V twin spouting out the termi on the overrun.
We're Kotor for two days, the second a day off bike. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cb6b8f8a70.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d61ce55c01.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...87f8828c28.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1a2dd55271.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c74095a239.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...316bae4715.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0d980e4db5.jpg

Thursday we head for Hvar Island, we got the ferry to Korcula and hit more excellent roads, 50km of mixed roads, from right technical corners to long sweeping bends, I'm scraping the pegs at this stage.
We hit Vela Luka, really lovely spot
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1ebe6292d4.jpg
Friday, this our last day on the bike, we get two ferries so that we don't have to do a border crossing. We stop for lunch and make our way up the coast to Split, it was bitter sweet, brilliant roads and great final days biking but sad that it was coming to an end.
I loved the trip, had none stop craic, I've already booked the next trip.
The Ducati is going in for its desmo service, I'll hang onto it for one more trip then I'll likely replace it with another one. The trip was 2200km. That brings the bikes mileage to a bit over 30k km.
The only thing that lets this bike down is the service, I need to travel 900km to get work done but I would only replace it with another Ducati, such a fantastic machine, it oozes character and is so engaging.

Enjoyed that read and photos, even though I've only ever been on a moped!

amazing trip!

The time is coming again to prepare for the next trip.
The bike just clipped over 30k km when I got back from the Balkans last year.
Which means it was time to do the dreaded desmo service.
I had planned on selling the bike this year so I didn't want the mileage to be too high, I also didn't want to do the desmo service immediately as it would just be due another service again around now.
So in order to keep the mileage reasonable and make it slightly more appealing come sale time, I put the bike into storage. To be honest, it didn't even come home.
So it's about a year now since I last rode a bike and on 4 weeks I do another trip, more on that shortly.
In preparation for this and to sell the bike, I booked it in with Millsport Ducati up north.
It takes two days to do the Desmo service and the price starts at £1200 if you don't need any valve clearances done.
I booked the bike in for Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of April.
Thankfully, the Lexus has a factory removable tow hitch and a buddy of mine leant me a bike trailer.
Wednesday, I drove to Wexford, picked up the trailer, grabbed the bike in Gorey and headed up to Ballymoney.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...770a5408e4.jpg
I'm always paranoid when I'm towing a bike so I pulled over to check the straps, and I noticed the spare wheel for the trailer, which had a lock put on it for the trip, was hanging low.
The extra weight of the lock (those chunky yellow bastards) caused one of the bolts to sheer from the movement induced. I gave it a bit of a wobble and the whole thing let go, lucky.
A few hours later I arrive in Ballymoney on the north, go to unhitch the trailer and I noticed the trailer plug had let go some time ago. Completely disintegrated.
Thursday morning, I drop the bike off. Grab the bits to fix the trailer electrics. Go sort the electrics and headed back to Belfast.
Finally settled another dilemma I've had. Didn't purchase, but I know what I want.
51k Mile Manual
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...691aef5bcd.jpg
70k Mile DCT
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2a12cc8183.jpg
I also drove a revo tuned B8 S4 and a Golf R, neither of which were worth talking about.
So Friday evening comes, I go pick up the bike, it's 5pm, the bike is due to be down, thankfully the valve clearances were all in spec but there were a few other bits done including some recalls. Just waiting for the software update.
The tech comes out with bad news, while they were flashing the ECU the laptop crapped itself and now my bike is lit up like a Christmas tree.
Ducati UK are now closed so it has to wait until Tuesday (most bike shops are closed on Monday)
Annoying, but shit happens. I head home with an empty trailer.
Millsport, full of apologies, sort it, the bike is done by the following Thursday.
AMI in Gorey arrange to collect my bike, they're shipping it to Italy for me in two weeks anyway.
So it's back and ready to roll, total bill including replacing a key I lost - €1700
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...235223c0ec.jpg
This will be the last time I use this bike, when it comes back, I'll sell it and probably replace it with the same again early 2021.
I'm doing Thailand, Burma, Laos and Vietnam next year and won't need my own bike for that.
That's outrageous Dave !
Certainly crossed off the list now if/when come to upgrade - the overall running costs really seem excessive if using it as it should be (and not being a garage queen). Leaning more towards the KTM 990 SMR or the BMW S1000XR instead TBH (different animals I know).
I remember the panic selling on the VFR800 VTEC's when it came close to the 16k mile valve clearance checks (you couldn't give them away then) as it was originally a horrendously expensive, main dealer only engine out job. The irony was that they never actually neeeded any adjustment, it was just Honda being over-cautious. The Desmo check of course is a necessity in fairness though....:(
There is no arguing it is expensive. But it's a magnificent bike, it completely blows the 990, the 1290, and XR out of the water, all of which I've spent a lot of time on.
The cost is high but for my money, there's nothing to offer the same experience, I've never ridden a bike I'm more dialled in to and I'll only replace it with another one.

High praise indeed ! My longer distance/higher mileage/touring days are long gone (someday again when the little ones grow up), so the idea of the hooligan within the speed limit(ish) ability of the SMR appeals to me tbh. It's only the odd Sunday spin and a couple of days a month commuting I do now sadly....:(
For the Alpine passes, the Duc is the one you want alright by the sound of it (with a full Zard maybe)...:)
Already have a full titanium Termignoni [emoji28]

Haven't updated this in a long time.
I ended up doing Tuscany and Corsica, what a trip.
Bikes were shipped out ahead of us again, bikes were waiting for us about 5km from Bologna airport.

As always, there was a big group of bikes but there were really just three of us who travelled together.
We got a bit unlucky with the weather, but we headed towards Florence.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...74374e3fcc.jpg
We headed towards Chianti, plan was to make Radda in Chianti our main base and take a few day trips out from there.
We got rained on for the entire stay, went out a few days, I like riding in the rain, it's great practice for riding smooth. Took a spin to Siena.

We spent a few days in Chianti, then moved back towards the coast heading to Livorno.
We spent half the day in torrential rain, but as we moved towards the coast, things started to look up.

We get to Livorno, pretty tired and slightly damp, but all in all a good day.

What greets us the following morning, is glorious sunshine, we make the most disorganised boarding onto the ferry to Corsica and what's waits for us on the otherwise is just driving Nirvana.
I disembarked, knew the rest of the tour were going to do Cap Corsa, and rather than putting people under pressure, I decided I'd go ahead and do my own thing.
Well, that didn't work out, I followed the sat nav for about 10km in the wrong direction as it wanted to cut off the 80 odd km of cap corsa, now I had to play catch-up. Time to open the taps on the big duke.

If you have not been to Corsica, go, it's fantastic. The roads are lovely and the countryside is gorgeous, you see all kinds of metal.
I knew I couldn't be more than 15km behind the pack so I went for it, the Multistrada was as really at home, it truly was outstanding, the termi spitting out V twin thunder, sun shining, music playing in my ears. Eventually I catch up with the pack.

We take a break, I notice that my clutch is a bit weird, I think to myself maybe there was a bit of air so quickly take out my tool kit and release some of air. I'm surprised to find air in the lines considering the fluid had been changed 2 months prior to the trip. It's all part of the adventure, so I set off and monitor my fluid levels, our destination is Calvi, I figure I can change the oil when I get there.
We had a fantastic blast down to Calvi, didn't get a chance to take any photos but did stumble across this beauty.

Next day we head for Bonifacio, the roads and scenery just get better and better, as does bike, I changed the clutch fluid and everything seems good. I put together a little service kit to keep me going in case of further issues and make a break for Bonifacio.

Bonifacio is a gorgeous town, with a lot of money floating in and out.

Spent a few days in Bonifacio before heading back towards the mainland where we would spend our final day in Pisa
We went cross country, and came across this pair of beauties.

We kept moving and Corsica just kept on delivering scenery and near empty roads.
A couple of shots courtesy of some folks on the trip

Looks like a fab trip, even with the weather. We did the same thing a few years back, using Radda as a base for a few days. Beautiful area and did some fab hiking in the hills around the area. Great memories of the place, the hiking and the Chianti Classico Superior. The only time I've ever been truly scared driving a car was a rental picked up in Florence to drive to Radda. The city drivers were complete and utter nutters! I can't imagine what it was like there on a bike.
Also did some driving on Corsica. Great roads and routes for a bike I would have thought!
