That's what I mean, it wouldn't pull to the end of the rpms when it wouldn't accept dyno mode.
Still quick enough for me!

Yeah I'm quite happy. It definitely felt sharper after I changed all fluids, and filters, fitted new plugs, cleaned the MAFs and ran a couple of bottles of BG 44K through it.

Fellow M5 owners, could one of you show me how your battery is clamped in place please?
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
Mine is retained by the foam section that sits on top and fixed by the cover as shown

I've no foam, but I did have the lid. So there's no metal strap holding it in? I'm surprised.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
Look down the sides, there might be a 10 or 13 holding a small bracket against the battery.
Thanks Dave

Also, found this, I don't appear to be missing anything.

Hmm me either so. It just seems surprising BMW would rely on a plastic cover to retain the battery.
In other news, I replaced my headlight adjusters. All 4 broken!!! I was lucky enough to pick up a xenon headlight in the breakers, with cracked brackets, for free, so I could play with it to see how to do them "for real" on my car.
I can see how one of them is replaceable through the rear, but not the other.
So I fired up the oven, baked the lamp at 110 degrees for 5-6 minutes, and took the front off.

It was one of those jobs that was easier in the execution than the planning!
FYI, they were oe Hella lamps, 2002 build date.

Tristan, is it easy enough to get the lens off after baking it?
Kudos on the sparkling oven - must have been taken before the Turkey went in...
Lol no turkey in this oven!
It came off handy enough, I reckon another few degrees or a minute more would make it even easier.
The main thing is to apply steady pressure easing off the lense, not to jerk it. A wide chisel or scraper helps.

Bloody Nora, 2.5 months and no update? Not good enough!
Although my Dad having a surprise heart attack which required emergency stents, then a triple bypass the following day may account for that... All good now though thankfully.
In less important news, tipping away at the "Big Girl". 'Cos, well, big girls need lovin' too.
New front pads to compliment my freshly skimmed front discs
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5e9921db52.jpg
Quinns were good enough to throw in a lovely poster and diary.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a2b1056269.jpg
Inner pads have left and right, made by Textar.
Front discs were noticeably out of true.
Not easy to machine, so Adrian in MecTec.ie made a special spindle to mount them on. I kept it, could be handy.
Took off the front bumper to remove the aux fan..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3a5fe94049.jpg
Of course, because I'm an eejit, I only decided to do that AFTER I'd replaced the dodgy front pdc sensors.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bc6916fac8.jpg
While the bumper is off I'm going to paint it. The last time it was painted I'd say Stevie Wonder was on the job, utterly shocking job, they even masked around the number plate! Like wtf!
The bumper is perfect in structure aside from a small crack on the underside that I repaired easily.
And with the bumper off I looked at the (bizarrely) unused brake air ducts.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...40a60c74ed.jpg
Two plastic ducts to the front grille from an "M" sport ordered, and the inner arch liners opened up to let the air pass to the brakes.
Before..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a8607ab2ed.jpg
After..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...38535b1525.jpg
Note to self, clean inner arch area...
Lastly, I finally changed the other dodgy rear pdc sensor, the inner one. Managed to do that by loosening the bumper, unbolting one side and had just enough room to get my fingers in.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4120a3de78.jpg
As a happy byproduct, I got the bumper fitting nicer too when tightening up.
Now, with the front bumper off, are there any benefits to modding the air Box intakes?
Not that I feel I'm struggling for power mind...

She'd have come from the factory with openings on the lower wheel arch liner. But because every single M sport and M5 has a low nose, they invariably got smashed and replaced by ones without the openings. I've had to make holes on any replacements I've ever got (and I've gone through a fair few in 15 years driving E39 M's lol).
Yea? Interesting. I'd read elsewhere that the 520 and M5 were the only ones without the inner arch holes.
Just need to figure out a neat and simple way to attach the scoops to the front mesh.
Oh and to open out the blanked off sections.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
The aluminium scoops kinda hang from the chassis leg / wheelhouse - yours looks kinda bent (like everyone else's from the arch liner getting a wallop - the screws / quarter turns of the liner should lock on the bottom of the scoops.
Doubt that the 520 and M5 are without holes, I mean if any car is going to need cooling the M5 is - I'd use a file to square up and open up the openings you've made, or are you talking about something else?
Some of the dinan / big brake upgrade kit's come with trumpet's that are integrated into the bumper mesh and flow more air to the cooling ducts / wheel arch.

I beg to differ
It's reported on lots of forums and boards how the M doesn't have them. Hence different arch liners too. Realoem doesn't show the plastic ducts for my chassis number either.
The consensus seems to be it has something to do with high speed aerodynamics.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
My aluminium scoops aren't bent tbh.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
I'm not giving a dig Tristan, the scoops look good, but the strips of aluminium that hang down from them are bent slightly up, into the curve shape in the photo - I think when they're new they are straighter. Simple to put right with a pliers, it lets the screw holes line up easier etc
Fair enough on the vent's being blanked in the M5 liner - ever day's a school day - how weird is that? You'd imagine the M5 disc would be the hottest of the lot and need the most cooling / fade prevention.
Well I'll be damned - yup real oem confirms 520's and M5 have the same non opening liners only

Compared to say 530D M Sport

Honest to hell Joe, it doesn't make sense does it?
I get what you mean about the ally strips, I thought the same myself, but without seeing others I wasn't sure what shape they should be.
No digs taken lol. I'm a lot thicker skinned than that! 😂

I'm well known to be a persistent b&stard when I want to find out why something is the way it is for a technical reason
It turns out that
The 520i doesn't need cooling for obvious reasons
Everything in between does
The m5 doesn't need ram air cooling because the disc has both rear and front (of disc) air passage. This lets the disc do it's work independent of ram air ducted (motorway) speed. makes sense for a car that can be just sent to twisty's.
But that doesn't seem to be the case in real life, standard M5 brakes were the weakest link in the package (start to fade early) but the big brake conversions handled that - all depends on what you do with your baby.
Yea, that was the same as what I thought. Still, doesn't seem legit. Agree totally, stock M5 brakes are barely adequate for the weight IMHO. I'd love to try the M3 multi pot conversion, even though the disc is slightly smaller.
I'm trying to keep this Big Girl as oe as possible within reason. And I won't be trackdaying it.
I feel better though with the increased airflow to the inner arch area, even if it only helps a small bit.
While in that area, it's crossed my mind to add an extra, colder, air feed to the airboxes... free power at worst, and concealed by the bumper.
After that I think a rear view camera retrofit, probably an e60 rather than E39 one, and I think the sisters are getting me Bluetooth with aux-in for my upcoming birthday.
NCT due next month, fingers crossed. If financial constraints aren't too bad I might tax it for May.

Scroll to the pic with the wheel off, front wheel arch ;-)
Nice car though with some choice mods. Ksport brakes is surprising though, wouldn't be very highly regarded compared to AP or Brembo etc.

There is a "BMW performance" upgrade kit for the M5 AFAIK - There was a lad on here from Cork -PhilipM5, with the mother of all E39 M5's in terms of mod's - don't think he's around here that much now, but he had some savage discs and I remember a monster calliper wrapping around them. I'm sure the lads here know what I'm on about.
Is that the M3 kit? Like this
https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3...e92-325i-328i/
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
Nope, it's the bmw performance kit for the 135i. JohnH has them on his M3. You'd need to have custom fabricated brackets made, I have the cad drawings if you want them.
They're a smaller diameter disk than the standard M5 disk, smaller in width too, and non floating.
I don't fancy having a monoblock calliper on a non floating disk with the M5.
I'm looking at the stoptech trophy kit personally

Hi Tristan, Brian is my own name from Cork. I was the guy who originally imported this in from the UK back in 2009 and I had it for two years. I remember looking for ages for a clean low mileage car with all black leather as I didn't like the two tone. It had 54k miles when I bought it if I'm not mistaken. It was absolutely immaculate when I picked it up. I think it was a man called John Harper had it in Leicester and I bought it off him. There wasn't a mark on the car and I kept it like that for two years (which is a lot by my standards) and sold it to a gent in Dublin, whose contact details I still have. I had many regrets afterwards! I stumbled across this thread and was delighted when I saw the reg. I think you will enjoy the car anyway, loads of torque and a glorious sound. Very tidy handling for a big car too. I'm really glad to see it is alive and well and that you are lavishing the love it deserves on it. I wish you well with it anyway Tristan. All the best,
Brian
Thanks Brian! Glad to hear from you, adding to the history! Hopefully some day we might meet in person at a show or something.

Stealthy.
Opinions, please
Have my grills black too - think the chrome effect dates the car a lot, but I dont think the all black is the best either, but better than the chrome - if that make sense!
I was thinking satin black outer with the chrome tipped vertical slats from the original M5 kidneys.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
I'd keep the chrome. I think it goes well against the black.
Putting the chrome grills back on my M3 was one of the best things I did for it's look.
I'm with eoin on this, the black looks ok only with certain colour cars, but chrome on Black is best imo - I do remember seeing a gunmetal version for sale a while back on flee bay (dunno what the quality was like) looked well, it would be very like the colour of your rims Tristan
Is there anyone around who could do a dark chrome finish?
