Do I need a form stamped by Gards?? Will I have to back tax it??
Stupid rule, But you can only SORD a car BEFORE the current tax expires, Not after.
So you'd need to pay 3 months arrears before they allow you to SORD it.
Or you could sell it to a family member/neighbours dog etc.. and the they would be liable from the 1st of the month of purchase. So they buy it today and SORD it straight away from Jan 1st.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
That is a load of Balls Cox, seriously what was the person smoking who thought of that, so I can only declare a car off the road while it is taxed......another money racket.
For example, my car was in tax when I left it into a garage to have some work done, the car ended up staying there longer than expected and is now out of tax. I haven't been driving it since November, but id now have to tax it for 3 months, circa 400 Euro, even though the car has not been on the road and wont be on the road until the summer in order for me to declare it off the road..... It's actually funny how backward that is.
So I would have had to get a special form, prob in a Garda station, then go into the tax office with it to declare a car off the road, even though it is in tax...... otherwise I will have to pay three months tax even if it hasn't been on the road if the tax runs out. Seriously I would like to give whoever implemented this system a rock bottom followed by a sharpshooter......idiots

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Theres no ability to sign it off the road retrospecively anymore. You're on the hook for a minimum of 3 months tax from December. (unless you 'sell' it and 'buy' it back as mentioned above - 2 additional owners on the log book though)
Once I got the renewal for the M3, I took the PIN number and declared it off the road for the full year. At that stage there was a chance that I'd renew the tax, but didn't want to take the chance of forgetting to make the SORD declaration.
When I want to tax it again I just fill in the form and post it off, no visit to the Garda station required. You can't renew online at the moment if there is a SORD in place without it trying to charge you backtax apparently.

Is it possible to declare a car off the road, then when it's time to re-tax it apply online for a new pin using the last 7 digits of VIN, then taxing online that way??

Apparently not, but I haven't tried. You can renew it online no problem - but it shows your SORD period as being arrears which need to be paid. I'd imagine they'll fix the system pretty soon.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
So if I declared the car SORND for a year, at the end of November last before my tax ran out, but I then wanted to take it out on the road in June, is there a penalty?? or is there no problem if I want to take the car out 6 months into a 12 months SORND period , could I just tax it for three months in June, then SORN it again three months later before my three months tax runs out??
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Is it correct that if you wish to put a car back on the road before the declaration of non use is up you will have to pay some back tax. ie it can't be taxed from the exact date it goes back on the road

The car must be taxed from the 1st day of the month in which it goes back on the road, same as before.
If you put the car back on the road before the expiration of a non use period you do not need to pay arrears, only pay the tax from the 1t day of the month you put it back on the road. This assumes you tax it in the same month as it goes back on the road and that arrears are not genuinely owed.

Theres no penalty for you to do this - you just pay tax from June onwards for 3/6/12 months. The SORN is cancelled as soon as the car is taxed. As John said - you pay tax for the full month where it goes back on the road, so not much sense in sticking tax on the car on the 25th June when you can wait 5 days and get the whole of July for example.
Its for that reason alone that you'd be mad to do anything other than a 12 month SORN declaration - no point in risking the SORN expiring and you being back on the hook for arrears.
Probably ploughing a lone furrow here, but I'm a fan of the system. Bit more system automation and it'll be good.

anyone can tax it if you have the login details online or the log book in the office. All they are looking for is the money.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
So yes just as i had thought from the get go, and i actually contacted Mr Rabbitte and his co-horts about how farcical the implementation of this whole off the road declaration is.
Here i am trying to declare my vehicle back on the road and my options are
- go all the way into the city centre and queue in what i believe is not only 1 of 2 Tax offices left in Dublin. As they chose to close down one of the busiest public buildings ive ever set foot in (clondalkin office)
- Post in the R500a form to the dublin office, to which i am told they cannot process it until February comes around and only then can they work on processing it and dispatching a disk.
So i pay the favourable sum of 511 Euro for 3months and i cannot drive the car for the full 3 months until they pull their finger out and process the payment and send the desk.
What a fantastic barrel of utter shite we have in this country, and these edgits wonder why we view every thing they do with skeptism.
BTW, i attempted to declare it back on the road online system. It dont allow you to do this and indicates you owe back tax if you attempt it.
Handy clap for whatever incompetent moron came up with this.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
I queued for 10 mins in Dublin motor tax office today - all taxed and no visit to garda station for stamp.

Just fill in an RF100 and post it? You can put the off the road period in and you don't need to get the form stamped.

I never said anything about Garda stamp, I dont know about you but I dont live in the city centre and i also have a full time job. So the suggestion about taking time off work to pay money for car tax is frankly laughable.

I indicated that i did this already. In fact the form was sent in 2 weeks ago. The lady in the tax office informs me that they cannot process it until February turns around. Guess what... its Feburary now, I have sent all the details in. I have no disk and i am paying for the privilage of not driving my car. When will i have the disk ? The lady in the email tells me to contact my local tax office.... Well that would be superb if they ever answered the phone.
Anyone who defends this type of backwards archaic system Especially with the rates i am paying i have nothing but suspicion of.

Firstly - you indicated you sent in an RF500a, not an RF100.
Secondly, I'll defend it because its better than what proceeded it. Its far from perfect, but it was never going to be 100% from day one.
Queueing in the garda station to get a stamp was a ballache - its done with now. You can declare the car off the road in seconds, getting it back on still requires a form but that will be resolved eventually.
Finally, the massive backlog causing issues is because half the country was ripping off the system and not taxing their car. Over 30,000 additional agricultural vehicles which had never been taxed came into the system as a result of it - thats not to mention the thousands in the system which just hadn't been taxed in years.
If the facility to re-tax a car with is SORN'd online doesn't go live in the next 12 months I'll have a gripe, until then I'm happy enough with it - theres absolutely no disadvantage over the old system for anyone at the moment, you've never been able to tax a car in advance like you tried.

If you are being pedantic about form numbers then yes i wrote the form number wrong in my initial post.
Frankly the fact that 30,000 or whatever were ripping off the exchequer has not reflection on me. If you dont have the man power (which isnt true) to implement such a system you delay it or at least roll it out in an appropriate manner, Which begs the question why they have closed as i stated above one of the busiest offices in Dublin.
No this system is not better than the previous, as per usual its roughly implemented and that's acceptable here because we all accept mediocrity.
This wouldn't fly in private enterprise especially when we are paying beyond top dollar for this so called service (tax).
Perhaps if there is such a bloody backlog then we can redirect some of these 2000 or so bodies we are lead to believe will be wound dont off Irish water from local authority's, but sure no redeployment isnt allowed either is it.
Mediocrity and its acceptance, il never quite understand it.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
If somebody wishes to sell there car to somebody in order to buy it back to avoid paying tax is there any implementation on the insurance if the said car is currently fully insured?? Or is there any negative to this that I don't know about?? Just looking to understand the system
(everybody should pay the outrageous road tax we have here in order to use our beautiful roads, even though most of the good roads are actually tolled anyway)

 :D
-They should abolish 3 months waiting lists on NCT too, oh wait that wont bring in any more revenue.
-They should allow the person who buys a vehicle tax it immediately and abolish the 2-3 weeks of waiting for a log book in order to tax the vehicle and this would eliminate people vehicles being lifted and impounded while their waitting for a log book to tax the vehicle, oh wait that will only decrease the revenue.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
So got the renewal for the e36 that was declared off the road until March. Got no PIN with the renewal form. Don't plan to tax it until April so wanted to put it off for another 3 months but with no pin I tried the pin retrieval, no luck says I need to go to local tax office to tax the car or put it off the road!!
Got the RF150 form but not saying anywhere to post it off so presume it needs to be taken to a local tax office.
GGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrr
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Same, can't believe they don't send a pin! I'll probably tax it march for 3 months though as the car should be ready soon enough :) I'll be away for the month of June so it's either tax it March for 3 months or wait till July!! And I can't wait till July... :D

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Went to the motor tax office today, and I know people complain about it all the time, but when you're in work 8.30 to 6 and you have to use all your break for the day + time off work to go do something that should be a click of a button online is a load of fucking shit!

Just post the RF150 to your local tax office, save you the hassle of going in. You'll get a tax disk within a week or so of posting it.

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
need a bit of advice on this matter, I have the logbook of a car I bought but i want to declare it off the road for 3 months starting from tommorow 1st of April
how exactly would i proceed to do this properly ? it says on the motor tax FAQ that you have ten days from date of sale, so if i post it tommorow and i dont get the new logbook back within ten days then i get screwed?
-
RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
I chanced posting off the declaration form and logbook together.
Got a call from Tax Office (Shannon posted it on to Limerick), Saying the car wasn't in my name ans they couldn't do it.... Convinced him to keep it aside and put it theough when ownership is transferred.
Should have it back in the post today.
Bought on the 20th March: (Thursday and posted the book next day)
Notified on 25th March:
Tax-Book Issued on 28th March:
11 days and counting so far.

PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Called them
And was on hold for 30
Mins . Total arseholes ! Basically if I post log book and don't get it back within ten days tough luck it's my problem . Such incompetence . So what I will do is post log book then in 3 days declare it off the road and hope their system will be updated

RE: PLEASE READ: Off the road declaration/SORD
Quick question just out of curiosity,if your car gets impounded by the guards for no tax whats the procedure in getting it back?,like is it just the release fee and impound fee you have to pay or do you have to show that you have paid the tax and arrears?

you need to pay the tax up to date I presume before they will release it otherwise there is no point in them taking it to start, and also all the fees they have to add on will need to be paid....

Ah right i thought that was the case, was just wondering because the guards posted on twitter yesterday and a few replies were saying that it was only the impound fee that needed to be paid.
