Edit: Large enough chunk of money either way.
Is this not only if you ignore it and it breaks causing a lot more damage
Just look at it as maintenance if you had a vw you would need to change the timing belt 2 or 3 times throughout its life is well
Its bad form on bmws behalf and all should have been recalled but what can you do thats life
My fiancée has one, we bought it about a year ago in the UK. It's good fun to drive and is quite quick even if it doesn't feel it sometimes.
I've never seen another one over here which is nice.
I also test drove the 118d and 120d coupes before and they're not as good in my opinion.
She gets about 42-45mpg mixed driving.
It's an early 08 (march) so it needs 10w-60 like the M's (it's a bit ching ching) but you can get fixed price servicing as it's older than 4 years. They changed some bearings a few months later in the production run and the oil for those is the standard 0-40 or whatever.
You can get a BMW warranty https://www.bmw-warranty.ie/Start which covers the chain snapping, it's about 500/600 for the year and gives peace of mind.
Any other questions feel free to ask.
WHat year is yours?Quote:

Sorry Hooch, I update the post and didn't see yours. It's a 2008 so cheap tax @ 280 a year. She worked in the north so the VRT was waived as she has just moved down here a month or so ago.
Nothing has gone wrong touch wood, but if you look on babybmw you'll find all the things that go wrong, mostly same as an e90, clutch, dpf, chain.
Also i'm 5,11 and I wouldn't lke to be in the back for longer an half an hour as my head hits the roof so there's not loads of space back there.
That was a petrol one right? Same with the compact..had the chain changed as I didn't want it to let go and cost a lot more. Job on the petrol is cheaper than the diesel though I think?Quote:

I know of a couple of places doing the chain for 1500 now so it's not that off putting after.
The chains are very light in them though, I wonder is that one of the causes of them stretching.
Yep petrol donal could be because the chain is at the front of the block easier accessQuote:

Its scary actually how fragile new bmws are
Stolen easy - check
Ride is shite due to rft's - check
Modules failing - check
Timing chains weak - check
Dpfs,turbos,injectors failing - check
But no doubt i will buy another and another after that as for the money they are the best available even with bags of issues they are starting to turn into the alfa romeos of the car world great when running right [emoji1]
its less 2k btwQuote:
