Has Rebel or any of the lads got an oil extractor handy? Might be worth a shout out to.

There not something about the newer model beemers not re-registering the oil level unless its drained empty and refilled from zero? Happens on f10/11's i think.
I'll do you a good deal John :D
@ Ciars: I'll give em a shout, just don't want to be annoying people for every little thing
Any other input meanwhile appreciated.
....Just what exactly was wrong with a dipstick???
Because drivers are becoming lazier...such a stupid system and bmw should have stuck to the dipstick! Another example would be why some models don't have a water temp guage e.g. the e87 1 series:mad:
Pretty sure the car has to be in motion for the oil level to be updated. Not just ticking over! Could be wrong though.
The drain and refill thing isn't correct anyway. Mine would pop up with a message to top up by a quantity, last time it told me to top up by 1litre only, this was through the iDrive. And topped up by the 1 litre and took for a spin within a minute or so the level updated.

Peter you should've got the diesel, they still got the dipstick :D
A litre should be sufficient to get the level from Min to Max. On Mrs D's e91 it seems like the engine needs to have been running for a while and started warming up before you'll get a reading.
Its also not unknown that the oil level sensors can throw a sh1tfit from time to time and need replacing.
This function is a fine example of where BMW should have followed the adage - if it ain't broke don't fix it, as far as the dip stick was concerned. Simple technology that was only prone to a lack of use on the owners part rather than failure or misleading readings. The new technology still hasn't solved the former and increased the chances of the latter.
I did the same on my own, from min to max is supposed to exactly 1l, and from what I gather you shouldn't really top it up until it tells you to. I overfilled mine slightly so I just loosened the nut and let some out, otherwise getting it sucked out would be handier.
Thanks for the input eveybody, much appreciated as always. All sorted with an extractor. Took 400ml out and it's spot on now :)

Edit: The little warning triangle is because I'm low on fuel in case anybody's wondering ;)
Sad, but I was.... :wink:Quote:
