Ours has the sport seats, so, other than being a little compact and bijoux for a generously proportioned me, they’re fine, and not a lot to do with the reason why.

I hadn't really intended to get in to a game of table tennis about the relative merits of Alpina's vs. M's, and vice versa, but as an aside, there does seem to be a concept being aired that I'd question, namely that in order for a car to be a real "M" it must have harsh suspension, rattle the fillings of the occupants and have a significant amount of power. The final of these criteria is fairly certainly true though.
A vague inversion of that view is that if something is stiffer/harsher than something else with comparable power then its automatically quicker point to point than the "softer", alternative. In the real world, stiffer/harsher doesn't necessarily mean faster from A to B. If harshness is a measure of "M-ness" then Mrs D's old e91 318i on RFT's should have been an M.
As it happens, the Alpina's tend to be fairly close to their "competing" M on power. :)
